He ran federally in West Vancouver in 2021, coming in third place with 25 per cent. And then in Vancouver Centre in 2025 where he received 12 per cent of the vote, coming in second place, losing to LPC „Weekend at Bernies“ Hedy Fry.
Whatever Avi Lewis is good at, politics ain’t it.
National rent control and public grocery stores? Is Avi and the left trying to outdo Singh in losing NDP vote share? Rent control isn’t even a federal responsibility and public grocery stores are a crazy complex proposal compared to more simple fixes like just raising social assistance rates.
Instead of copy-pasting ideas from American mayoral candidates and activist petitions, perhaps the NDP should step outside their little bubble, talk to regular Canadians, and focus on what’s actually possible at the federal level.
Re: public grocery stores – it’s an effective topic to garner attention. It’s provocative, and it gets people talking. I highly doubt it would ever come to fruition (because it wouldn’t result in lower prices, and for a million other reasons). I also don’t think publicly run stores is the answer to affordability that working class voters want. So go ahead and use that idea to get coverage and engagement, but he better make sure he has some more substantiate, pragmatic policy ideas that speak to average working class Canadians, and not just the highly educated champagne socialist class that likes to prescribe solutions for the plebs from their million dollar condos.
