Part of why satire works because they really can’t nail you for the literal words you use.

This + Colbert bring back the Colbert Report as a segment last night. Over-the-top satire works when shit is over the top.
I felt like I was watching Fox News or Newsmax..
Perfection. Not what I was expecting. Clever and spot-on.
It felt pretty tame. The gag of being weary of state censorship only works if the episode itself isn’t pulling its punches. As it stands, the episode tried to satorize a state media dystopia but did so while delivering something that wouldn’t anger the state too much.
It was, in a word, safe. And that’s just about the worst thing they could have done.
It’s genius, but it won’t occur to those who lack self-awareness, or won’t care. Both? My only hope is that the more brazen Trump 2.0 gets, the louder resistance grows, and the collective wakes up from their apathy and greed and realizes that democracy is priceless compared to whatever they’re offered to give up free speech
Letterman did it the right way.
Such a shame everyone else went satire instead of taking a stand.

Went to The Daily beast to watch the clip. I shit you not, I got an ad for the Hulu/D+/ESPN bundle fronted by John Cena. Groan.

Satire is important and this was a wonderful response by Stewart.
Jimmy Fallon’s team took a similar path in his opening monologue and that was very well done too.
Jon nailed it: The gaudy gold trim everywhere. The ass-kissing at every turn. The Albania and Aberbaijan war. Telling pleading with his audience to STFU and stop booing Trump.
Stewart is taking on this persona not just because it’s hilariously over the top but also because it’s not really THAT over the top and is realistic. This depiction of a not-so-distant-future is going to be happening soon if people keep letting Trump’s goons take their liberties away.
The right is so weak, fragile and pathetic. No president in history is the giant snowflake trump is. His fragile narcissistic ego just can’t cope. He’s the king of insults and name-calling yet can’t handle hearing the truth told about him, his cult or his fascist regime. Republicans have forfeited their right to call themselves Americans. Their leader is a childish fascist bully, just like his idols, Hitler and Putin. Never forgive the voters of this country for waiving their right to vote to save American democracy from rightwing extremism, last November. Never.
TDS did not go nearly far enough in their criticism. I wonder if past watershed moments in history are often overlooked as possibly benign or insignificant at the time of the event.
Feels like the last 8 months has turned America into a fascist state.
Feels like people are so consumed with surviving in their own personal lives that the overall health of the democracy is thrown to the wayside so the rich can do whatever they please.
