Yeah, Kimmel got edgy, but that’s comedy for ya. It’s high time we stop cancelling every other thing that ruffles our feathers.

The Trump administration and its allies are indeed exploiting Charlie Kirk’s death to justify censorship and crackdowns on their political opponents. Which is something Kimmel argued in so few words.

Conservatives are politicizing Kirk’s murder so they can establish a pretext to declare open war against „the left.“ This is clearly reflected in the president’s and his follower’s rhetoric and actions directly following the attack.

But what they fail to acknowledge is that they’ve been waging a war against their perceived enemies for years.

And while they have the audacity to suggest that they are merely bystanders, or even victims of this political climate and culture of division, violence and radicalization, they are—in reality—its primary enablers.

Try as they might, there’s no way for them to rationalize this blatantly unconstitutional maneuver.

Earlier on Wednesday, FCC chairman and Trump loyalist, Brendan Carr, publicly threatened to pressure ABC/Disney into suspending Kimmel during a podcast interview with far right caricature, Benny Johnson. Johnson is now applauding this move on social media.

From Carr himself:

> We can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel, or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead

> Frankly I think it’s past time that a lot of these licensed broadcasters themselves push back on Comcast and Disney, and say ‘We are going to preempt — we are not going to run Kimmel anymore until you straighten this out.’ It’s time for them to step up and say this garbage — to the extent that that’s what comes down the pipe in the future — isn’t something that serves the needs of our local communities.

Sinclair Broadcasting later praised Carr for his rhetoric, and encouraged the FCC to continue taking regulatory actions against national networks that don’t come to heel.

Sinclair is conservative owned and has a pretty notorious reputation for inserting pro Trump narratives and right wing propaganda into its broadcasts. Executives at Sinclair aren’t shy about it either, they even told Trump during one of his campaigns that „we are here to deliver your message.“

And now they’re replacing Kimmel’s time slot on Friday with a Charlie Kirk memorial special across its stations.

That said, it also wasn’t long ago that Donald Trump himself stated that Jimmy Kimmel was „next.“

And how he’s saying openly that broadcasters will risk losing their licenses if the hosts of these shows criticize him. This isn’t necessarily a shocking revelation, but Trump is clearly saying the quiet part out loud now.

This recent move against Kimmel can’t be justified as another „purely financial choice“ or explained away as some kind of independent decision made at the sole discretion of the company—the federal government directly intervened.

Not to mention that Nexstar, a major ABC affiliate group, is currently seeking an approval for an acquisition worth $6.2 billion—sound familiar?

Speaking of, this isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last case where the FCC applies regulatory pressures on media or news organizations that hurt Trump’s feelings or don’t toe the ideological line.

Imagine if this were the other way around—if a democratic administration had appointed a loyalist to head the FCC, and that person was publicly threatening networks and pressuring them into firing hosts or cancelling shows that broadcast negative news coverage and criticisms of the president. Conservatives would have a collective fit. They’d cry „tyranny!“ They’d likely issue threats of their own while demanding resignations, impeachments, even jail time.

And while some conservatives are trying to make excuses for this administration, others are openly cheering on the move.

The Trump administration has been defunding independent journalism; stifling the free press; aggressively eliminating oversight; threatening to revoke licenses and take regulatory actions against networks airing broadcasts that are unfavorable towards Trump—all while trying to silence Trump’s critics. So this may not come as a complete surprise, but it’s a clear indication of a pattern of suppression.

Trump, his supporters and cohorts have normalized these authoritarian measures. There’s no ambiguity here, the line between democracy and autocracy is no longer blurred.

Remember that these are the same people who have been crying about „cancel culture,“ „censorship,“ and „political persecution“ for years, claims that have often been exaggerated or outright baseless.

The cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy is baffling. No, this goes behind mere hypocrisy, this is corruption, malice, cruelty…

And it’s not just because they’re enthusiastically employing the same kind of undemocratic methods that they’ve been accusing their political opponents of pursuing all these years, but it’s also because their accusations in the past have been largely irrational and fueled by their own culture wars and conspiracy theories.

They’ve relied so much on grievance politics and culture wars to depict themselves as victims of left wing tyranny, and now they’re abusing these notions to justify turning the tables on their enemies. In their minds, the oppressed have become the oppressors, but this is delusional of course.

I can only come to the conclusion that these people believe firmly that only *they* are entitled to the rights, freedoms and civil liberties that are guaranteed to them by the constitution. That only *they* are above the law when the circumstances call for it…

That only *they* have the privilege of violating constitutional freedoms, civil rights, and basic democratic norms in the name of „saving the nation“ from all of the imagined threats that are looming overhead or lurking around every corner.

Threats to *their* freedoms, *their* rights, *their* liberties, *their* country—not *our* country.

That only *they* can lay claim to being so-called „patriots.“

That they are morally, culturally, ideologically, socially and sometimes racially superior, and that any challenge to this hierarchy is a crime in itself—an absolute indignity.

Only *they* are permitted to censor and suppress others, to exclude them, discriminate against them, and trespass on their rights. It is *their* country after all.

Nothing is illegal for the POTUS anymore.

We can hope that the conservative SCOTUS does the right thing, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. If you have the time to scroll through reddit, you can spend like half an hour of planning to shift money away from Republican-leaning businesses. That actually does something. Dear Americans, why are you so upset? In Russia, Putin cannot be criticized by the media either. Anyone who does so ends up in prison or has a surprising accident or suddenly suffers heart failure.
