Who knew having to pay 10-15k per semester motivates you to graduate, rather than the studying being free.
I remember when I was doing a Master, I had a classmate from India that wanted to finish as early as possible as she wanted to graduate and marry before her dad died. She did it in year and half and didn’t even came back for the ceremony. Meanwhile I also met a finnish woman that had been doing the same 2 year program than us, but she was on her 5th year in it. I remember she said “I am taking it slow and I get money to study so why not extend it?”.
Most non-EU students aim to settle or live here permanently, which isn’t possible under a student status, especially since they also have to pay tuition fees. It’s not just pure motivation driving them. Instead of pursuing these pointless studies, it’s better to identify the so-called „students“ who have occupied student housing for ages, not to study, but to avoid private rentals.
Ok? Of course this happens. They are coming here *to* study. The average person doesn’t want to study as much. This is obvious.
This study was a very good use of money and time.
all about the money…expensive country ,0 jobs perspective, not really hard to understand why the leave.
They’re in a rush to start working at the kebab van, right?
Everything the study points out is logical, natural and expected lmao
Many might think because of the tuition fees and rightly so. But there are also non obvious reasons. As a non EU student, you are already behind in the line in job market. If you don’t study in time, you are in an almost impossible position. When I studied, then there was no tuition fees, I had many classmates who finished masters in less than 2 years. I was kinda late and I graduated in October of second study year.
There might be financial incentive for foreign students to study faster due to costs, but a sort of inverse is actually true for many Finnish students. It is often more beneficial to remain a student for longer and rack up work experience as you study. If you focus on graduating fast instead of on gathering work experience, it might be difficult to secure employment after graduating. It is often even excepted that a student graduates with plenty of work experience. The time spent studying is of much less importance.
Of course there can be occasional lazy students here and there, but what I described is the case for many fields (not all). This is the culture.
5.6 millions personne in Finland VS 8 billion on earth.. obviously you can find someone better than every single person in Finland. But doesn’t mean you have to make space for them and stay out 😅
I’m an EU citizen and I got shocked how it’s normal delaying courses/ECTS in Finland.. also how flexible the higher education system is comparing back home.
