Tbf the government’s primary job is to say they’re going to build more houses, and then do whatever it takes to make sure that doesn’t happen. They’ve only been at it for a decade. Everyone over fifty with a house wants things to stay exactly as they are – starved supply, insane valuations. Neither they, FF or FG give a flying fuck that no one under forty can buy a house.
Not to overstate the obvious – but if you want things to change vote Sinn Fein into power next time. I absolutely guarantee you they will build a shit tonne of homes. Their voter demographic is broadly on the other side of this.

Of course it was never going to meet the targets, what exactly did they change that help it boast activity in the building sector? Tough and unpopular decisions are going to be needed to fix housing. Decisions that voters, TD’s, officials and campaigners will not like. The government keeps thinking they have time to fix the problem and they don’t.
Honestly I am not sure why the government bothers with the housing targets, they haven’t even gotten close in years. The approach isn’t working so why are they bothering with this failing policy approach.

The last government and Housing Ministry under Darragh O‘ Brien blatantly lied about the numbers they’d achieved and effectively got away with it.
Why would they do anything else if they’re not being held to account?
