I don’t think the PM should take advices from Ford. „Captain Canada“ has lost its shine it seems, or maybe because Ontario is not a player of the Canola economy of Canada.
Piss off, Ford.
The Canadian auto industry has had years to play catch up and modernize with EVs and have failed to do so. Protecting them at the cost of Western farmers is exactly why the West feels alienated.
That being said, Canadian farmers should also be encouraged to diversify away from growing just canola.
So we’re going to sacrifice an existing, world beating, canola industry worth $13B in direct production, maybe $45B total for all processing and inputs, and supports 200,000 jobs, for what?
A nascent Canadian EV industry that isn’t good enough to compete with Chinese companies? The entire auto industry is worth something like $18B in direct production, $60B and 600,000 jobs if we consider all associated production. EV’s make up something like 10% of all auto sales right now.
I don’t agree with Ford here, but it probably does make political sense for him to side with the tariffs since Ontario auto workers are a huge voting base for him and he’s built quite a lot of political capital off of encouraging rent seeking behavior for the EV industry via federal/provincial funding & subsides etc.
Carney has the luxury of being able to pivot away from Trudeau’s EV policies without much issue, but Ford and the OPC’s probably need them to remain competitive and built up political support in previous years via advocating them. (Though at the same time, I’d also guess that Ford is probably going to retire anyways sometime in 2028-2029 before the next election)
The fact that we aren’t even trying to setup an incubator to incentivize a made in Canada EV with the sort of expertise we are supposed to have in manufacturing cars is actually more telling about the technological gap that exists right now in this space
We lost this sector and government doesn’t have an answer beyond throwing money at this point until we catch up (if we can that is)
This is an opportunity for Canadian automobile manufacturers to pivot away from inferior American behemoths. It’ll hurt in the beginning but I think it’s inevitable and alienating farmers is a bullshit tactic.
Let them build production plants here. The usa has taken their stance in crippling the NA auto sector for Canada via tariffs, American companies pulling out of the country etc.
We want EVs because Canada cares about the environment AND needs to make economic/environmental based decisions in light of the political climate with the US
I don’t see why we shouldn’t explore the Chinese EV piece.
Let’s be honest, the existing “Canadian” auto industry is dead anyways in 6-12months.
Does anyone really think a new “NAFTA” trade agreement happens under the current American regime?
We have a year to come up with a new auto industry that works for Canada. Pick the manufacturer that’s willing to work with Canada.
Let China sell EV’s in Canada if they assemble here. Also let any vehicle that meets EU safety standards be sold here as well.
