Medical tests on [Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro](https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/17/americas/bolsonaro-skin-cancer-brazil-latam-intl?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=missions&utm_source=reddit) this week showed the presence of an early type of skin cancer, doctors said Wednesday.
According to results from a Sunday procedure to have skin lesions removed, doctors found [squamous cell carcinoma](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/squamous-cell-carcinoma/symptoms-causes/syc-20352480), which starts in cells in the middle and outer layers of the skin.
“Two of the lesions tested positive for squamous cell carcinoma, which is neither the kindest nor the most aggressive, but it is still a skin cancer,” Bolsonaro’s doctor Claudio Biroloni said, according to [CNN Brasil](https://www.cnnbrasil.com.br/politica/laudo-de-bolsonaro-confirma-cancer-de-pele-diz-medico/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=twitter-feed&utm_campaign=politica-cnn-brasil&utm_content=link).
The news comes less than a week after the former president was convicted of plotting a coup d’etat, which prosecutors said included plans to potentially assassinate current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, 70, was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison. He has denied wrongdoing.
Bolsonaro’s cancer was described as “[in situ](https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/in-situ),” meaning the abnormal cells showed no signs of spread.
He can go to prison like anyone else. It’s a localized tumor that has been removed already. No excuses.
Cancer is never fun, but skin cancer is totally treatable when caught early. Hopefully his treatment went well so he can serve out the remainder of his sentence thinking about how he was a dickbag.

People are saying this is a cop out but maybe his lawyers asked for some sort of pre-incarceration physical and this is what showed up? I think it would be logical for any high profile criminal about to do time to get a pre-physical so that if anything happened to them inside no one could claim a pre-existing condition.
