This phrase says it all:
„This policy is misaligned with Canada’s long-term interests. It weakens economic independence, slows decarbonization and forces Canadians to pay more for EVs.“
I honestly don’t get it. China is the future. EVs are the future. China is the global leader in EV production and associated technologies (including batteries). It’s in Canada’s long term interests to grow the business relationship with China.
We put the tariffs on to protect our auto industry, which is heavily dependent on the US industry. The US industry has shown itself to be … unreliable. It’s not in our long term interest to stay wedded to them. It’ll suck in the medium term but it’s the move we have to make. Anyone who thinks the problems in the US will disappear when the mango does isn’t paying attention.
I say open the floodgates or else we’ll become the backwater for new technology. Let the US throw a tantrum and further isolate themselves.
And Don’t forget the European vehicles.
Our dependency on USA is a choice we are making today. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Hear me out:
Offer the Chinese companies to bring their factories here.
Offer them also to bring their battery infrastructure.
US companies are beholden to the American political whims.
And as we know USA is not particularly friendly towards EVs.
Edit: See what happened to Volvo-Polestar after they invested rivers of money to build the factory in North Carolina.
Our trade war with China makes no sense. Strike a deal to get them to move some portion of the production to some shuttered factory in Ontario and let’s get down to business.
