They already received it, in a format dictated by the Soviet Union:
Poland was to be excluded from the proceedings of the IARA by demand from the Soviet Union. The Allies agreed as part of the Potsdam Agreement, that the Soviet Union collects and distributes the Polish share of reparations. Furthermore, the Soviet Union would extract its share of reparations mostly from the territory in its own occupation zone. The Provisional Polish Government concluded the Polish-Soviet Reparation Treaty on 16 August 1945. The treaty allocated Poland’s share of confiscated German machinery, goods and raw materials. Furthermore Poland received 15% of the German merchant fleet acquired by the Soviet Union. Deliveries were overseen by a joint Polish-Soviet commission and lasted until 1953.

I can’t hear these reparations demands anymore. It’s annoying. Every four years, it’s an running joke in Polish election campaigns. Everyone knows they won’t get any money. The issue is settled. Three different Polish governments have confirmed that the whole thing is over, and the land they received after World War II is also a form of reparations. Furthermore, without Germany, the European Union wouldn’t exist and Poland have profited enormously from the EU and built its poor economy into a $1 trillion economy, and it could never exist in this form without the EU. The war is 80 years over. Let’s finally look forward.

At this point I think Germany has made way more than sufficient amends to say that bygones should be bygone considering world war II.

Poland’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, renewed his calls for Germany to pay reparations to Poland for World War Two during a visit to Berlin. In response, German leaders have reiterated that they consider the issue legally closed and that no reparations are owed.
Nawrocki, who took office last month, today met with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, as well as Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Afterwards, he headed to Paris for talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Following the meetings in Berlin, Nawrocki said that he had spoken with Steinmeier and Merz about “the challenges of regional security, the future of the European Union, the prospects for Polish-German relations, and compensation for the wrongs inflicted on Poland during World War Two”.
“I clearly emphasised both the issues that unite us and Poland’s expectations toward the German side,” added the Polish president, who earlier this month, on the anniversary of the German invasion of Poland in 1939, had [declared his demand for reparations](https://notesfrompoland.com/2025/09/01/new-polish-president-demands-germany-pay-war-reparations-on-invasion-anniversary/).
Steinmeier’s spokeswoman, Cerstin Gammelin, also confirmed today that Nawrocki had raised the reparations issue when the two presidents met. But she reiterated the longstanding German position that the matter is closed.
“In response to the demand by the Polish president for reparations, the federal president emphasised that, from a German perspective, this issue has been legally resolved once and for all,” wrote Gammelin. “However, the promotion of remembrance and commemoration remains a shared concern.”
She also noted that the two presidents had expressed agreement “that Ukraine must continue to be supported [against] Russia’s war of aggression…and that security along NATO’s eastern flank must be further strengthened”.

Around 6 million Polish citizens, 17% of the prewar population, were killed in World War Two, a higher proportion than in any other country. The German occupation during WWII left Poland with unimaginable scars: cities razed, thousands of villages burned, and 17% of the population killed. Every Pole back then knew someone who didn’t survive. It was a tragedy of a scale that’s hard to grasp, and it still shapes our identity today.
While reparations from Germany (and Russia) are a valid topic, no amount of money can undo the attempt to wipe out a nation. Instead of letting politicians use this history for clout, we should reject the idea of Poland as a nation begging for compensation. We’re better than that.
Poland is a nation of hardworking people striving for success despite past trauma. Rather than dwelling on the past, we should focus on building a strong future and working with Germany as equals. True reconciliation might come one day through mutual respect, not just financial settlements.
Let’s stop letting history be a political tool. Let’s focus on progress, partnership, and catching up with the West.
The same old story. The whole reparations question was settled decades ago. Yes, Poland was treated unfairly but by the USsr, not post-war Germany (not like Germany would have had any say in that matter anyway). This is nothing more than political theater to appease the nationalist polish crowd.
If Poland actually wanted justice they would go to Russia but everyone knows Russia would simply tell them to fuck off.
PIS party held absolute power for 8 years and did absolutely nothing in terms of reparations besides shouting about it all the time. They also never used word“reparations“ in any official diplomatic notes sent to Germany, because that would actually have diplomatic consequences instead of shouting it on TV. Now it is brought up again by a PIS president, all by himself without consulting anything with the current Polish government just so sh*t on the current government and show how PIS is „pro-Polish“ while current PO gov is „anti-Polish“. Reparations lost all the meaning, now it’s just exclusively a tool for right wing parties here to criticize center/left parties, so yes. Diplomatic relations with Germany are just used for domestic political infighting.
Greece in the meantime was one of the countries closest to Poland in terms of WWII devastation, but has barely received any reparations.

Poland did receive some reparations via the USSR under the 1945 Polish-Soviet Reparation Treaty, but it was controlled by the Soviets, limited, and ended in 1953 under coercion- Poland had no real sovereign choice. The 1953 renunciation wasn’t voluntary in a modern sense, and later treaties focused on borders, not reparations.
Poland suffered massive losses: 17% of its population, most major cities destroyed, huge economic and cultural devastation – far beyond what was delivered. Even if further reparations are unlikely, the history shouldn’t be cheapened. Deliveries happened, yes, but framing it as “Poland got what it was owed” ignores coercion, scale of loss, and moral responsibility.
I have a real disdain for this President, but he is a historian and he highlights a genuine sentiment of hurt that people are all too happy to gloss over because ‘boooo boring, poland at it again’.
For people with open minds: the material losses covered were maybe at around 5% the total material and economic damage, that it either arrived late, was stripped down or was controlled by Soviets. Even that fraction wasn’t delivered in a timely manner to help Poland at a time it mattered most to recover.
Actually losses: conservative estimate is around $50-100 billion in 1945 value, or roughly $1 trillion in today’s $$$

Reparations in both the USA and Europe seems like a divisive wedge issue drawn up by Moscow to divide people.
First, it’s pointless performative politics, because we all know it won’t happen.
Second, it only hurts. It doesn’t „move the conversation“. It emotionally offends the target, usually an important ethnic race or entire nation, that the underdogs are stupid to antagonize.
I’m almost certain that this is a bargaining chip more than anything. Because if this was an honest expectation it would alienate Germany as an ally without anything to gain. The matter is completely settled legally, there are binding international contracts that Poland has signed multiple times, so there is nothing Poland can do apart from asking again and again.
