I’d rather invest in domestic drone fleets and tech. At least that way we have some control over the production and procurement and aren’t at the mercy of a capricious, vindictive and rapacious administration.
Is the goal to win favour from US Republicans by giving billions of dollars to their friends in the defence industry? Then yes the F-35 is the ideal aircraft.
Is the goal the strategic defence of Canada? Then no, the F-35 is not useful.
There are different strategic concerns. The F-35 is by far (like by a huge margin) the most capable option available. The strategic concerns are reliance on the US in the mid-long term, and whether they would use that reliance to their advantage once we commit. I personally think that the current administration lacks the discipline to *not* do so in some capacity even if they know it will come at long term cost. Despite the recent threats if we don’t go with the F-35 I have no doubt they’ll fuck with us even if we do, maybe a little later.
On the other hand, choosing one of the other options greatly reduces military capabilities while not even completely eliminating dependence on the US is not necessarily the best way forward.
Like it or not, every NATO and western country that doesn’t produce their own 5th gen aircraft (literally just the US) is screwed and in the same boat. There are trade-offs in all directions.
