What? Author thinks the best way forward for the liberals is to be…conservative? Guy must be thinking the carney election is the start of some kind of movement to the right. When in reality its just that the liberals refuse to put forward someone who cant do TV at all
I think a lot of people would be very energized with seeing Karina Gould as leader of the OLP.
I myself also really respect Nathaniel Erskine-Smith but I think that would ruffle a lot of party feathers lol
Ford is an expert at election timing. He’s also a really great communicator. It’s amazing that he went from being booed to winning majorities.
It’s a clickbaity title. The article is saying Ford is being an electoral chameleon, basically changing his position all the time. So he may as well be a Liberal. The smaller part of the particle says the next Liberal leader needs to come with ideas. I mean … yeah, obviously.
It’s not a very meaty article. I feel like Ford will fail or move on more than the next party will win. Despite it all he’s proven to be a really effective politician. In that he knows when to call an election and can stay in power. Not the biggest fan of what he’s actually doing.
Someone said that, a way for Ontario to vote against Ford is if we ran for the Liberal party, because people still cant get over McGuinty and Wynne.
Ford know that this will be political suicide so he wont do it.
So the author thinks the OLP should move to the right? That would be a poor strategy. Crombie already tried that to some extent and it failed pretty badly.
Historically (pre 1985) the OLP was the right wing party being fiscally very conservative and liberal (in the philosophical sense) with the PCs being centrists and that guaranteed 40+ years of uninterrupted PC control from 42-85. It was only when the PCs began shifting to the right under Miller and later Harris and OLP moved left did they see success.
That gives the OLP two possible directions in my eyes support the progressive wing led by NES or Gould. Getting people hyped with a younger, charismatic and more progressive leader similar to what Trudeau did federally.
Or super unlikely trying to move to where the centrist PCs of old were and try and capture that same essence by being fiscally progressive/interventionist but stay socially near the centre. They have to do something as moving to the right won’t work nor will trying to run as bland old guard blue liberals.
Lololol Doug Ford is definitely a Conservative.
He has zero „left“ thoughts. A Liberal is „central“ so they have „right“ & „left“ qualities.
Ford is a surprisingly talented politician. He communicates well, is relatable and likeable. That’s hard to beat. To be supplanted he will likely need to leave in his own, or have some sort of unforgivable scandal emerge. Until then honestly his position looks extremely solid regardless of policy or Ontario cost of living or economy.
What OLP needs is someone who can get the media’s attention while they call out Ford’s BS.
So stuff like stop fucking with Toronto, the millions we spent on beer store contract, not messing with speed cameras, addressing diploma mills, etc.
What the OLP needs is someone who can make headlines and stay in the news while calling out Ford for all of his fuck ups.
They need someone who can energize the people of Ontario. They need someone who can sound like they know exactly what the problems are, and who can dumb down the solutions to be „simple“ to the layperson.
