I think Freeland’s inclusion in Cabinet was more so a ‘respect for my chief opponent’ (not much of an opponent at the end of the day) move more than anything else.
I think Carney will be happy to see this departure from Cabinet. One of the closest Trudeau allies (although she ended up taking him down) who he can replace with someone preferred.
That is an incredibly good fit for her
Freeland’s last year in politics has been an incredible whirlwind of a story, but it seems Carney is now making official what has been unofficial since January: Freeland is no longer a big figure in parliament.
Quite the downfall.
A position that’s been naturally built for Freeland, both in professional and personal capacity.
Of course, there are political optics to consider, but it’s a totally understandable move with or without that in mind.
It’s a great fit for her, a massively important global role (which is personally important to her) and solves a political problem for MC.
I am a big fan of hers, and am very happy to see this.
That sounds awesome. I can see Freeland assisting Ukraine establish and rebuild their country after Russia is kicked all the way back to Moscow.
By most accounts a highly ineffective leader (personal and publicly visible anecdotes). The only reason she was retained in cabinet was because of Carney’s personal loyalty to her. Hopefully she rides out into political obscurity with this role.
Carney was expected to gun some previous cabinet positions out, rather then shuffle deck chairs on the Titanic. $10 bucks says Steven Guilbeault is next.
This is a perfect placement for her, actually. We need a person who is both passionate and well versed on the Ukraine file. It opens up space for a mini cabinet shuffle to inject some new blood as well.
The reality of being out of the spotlight with a less prominent portfolio had probably set in for her—this seems like something she would have been happier doing all along so a good outcome for both parties.
I’m surprised that Carney didn’t put her in a role like this or a Secretary of State for European affairs sooner.
She’s lousy politician and was a terrible finance minister, but a role like this is far more in line with her actual qualifications. Hopefully she just resigns as an MP and Ukraine can keep her.
