It seems as though every country is at a different point of the same late-stage capitalism meltdown.
I feel like we constantly talk about how there’s not enough houses, how rents are too expensive, how people are forced to share homes with strangers in house shares and having your own private space is becoming a luxury, how there’s not enough social housing, not enough temporary housing, not enough housing for asylum seekers, too expensive student housing, thousands of empty homes rotting because nobody wants to invest in them, thousands of dying high streets because nobody wants to invest in converting them to housing.
And yet absolutely zero is being done to address any of the above.
I think it is one of the lasting failures of devolution that neither devolved nation can point to a better record on housing than the UK Government.
I would argue over the last few decades that it is the most obvious area of state and market failure. There is also some evidence that Andy Burnham in Manchester, with far less time, has achieved far more.
