What’s the point of this? You ALREADY have a SIN number which indicates your „citizenship status“.
It’s smith importing more american culture war BS to signal to her base. This is intentional to make it easier to „other“ non citizens.
And as usual it’s their purely performative garbage that makes them appear to be doing something while not actually helping Albertans in any material way
Needs to be challenged under privacy legislation. Providing proof of age of majority to a bouncer or store clerk, or the ability to drive at a rental agency or traffic stop should not require someone to disclose citizenship status.

I’ve only ever had to prove my citizenship when passing through customs. What purpose would I need to carry proof of my citizenship status in my own home province.
As a landed immigrant and now current citizen, I fully support this move. Idk where my landing paper is and I don’t want to dig up my passport every time I need to prove my citizenship for whatever reasons. Sure it can be misused but the convenience of it is worth it for me.

My God, the UCP will never rest until they drag this country down into the incessant culture wars of the failed state to the south. It’s utterly exhausting.
I don’t know why they want it specifically and it seems unnecessary in general yet at the same time I’m fully supportive of a pan-Canadian ID card which includes citizenship on it. I don’t know why they would choose a driver’s license when the health card has more people holding it (unless it’s both as part of the redesign) so while I don’t see the necessity, I also don’t hate it in the sense that it’s a complete ID card.
I would just prefer it be a consistent, issued to everyone for all purposes ID card.
The description as “first province” in the headline is red flag to me. Seems like unnecessary consent manufacturing for other provinces to do the same. Why are you doing that CBC?
Bullshit. This is about making it easier for the cops to check your immigration status. Just in case you’re dodging out on a removal order or to make it easier to target non citizens.
I’m not a fan of the immigration levels right now but this is going too far and fucking with people who are already here.
