If you fail, you should probably practice more with instructor to increase your chances?
I know someone who failed their test multiple times in a certain continental country (don’t want to doxx them by saying where as they are an active Redditor) but they had to produce a report to show they didn’t have motor coordination, cognitive or visual issues etc before they could reapply. They had failed about 5 times. The approach taken was that if you’d failed a couple of times it was fine, but if it was a repeating pattern there was something seriously wrong and it was an indication that maybe you’d be better off not being behind the wheel.
It seemed sensible to me. There’s definitely an issue if someone just can’t pass and it probably should be checked out. It might just be nerves or bad luck, but they at least ensured it got checked out.
There will also be improvements to public transport to make up for this, right?

I’ve failed once in finglas, the inspector pointed nothing the hole journey, when we were inside the test centre the person started tipping on the iPad like crazy, I thought it was signing off paperwork, turned out they failed me.
I reapplied for the earliest date, 0 extra classes and the next inspector by the end of the test said: congrats it’s a clean sheet.
It’s a scam!
They always fail 50% of people anyway, so failing twice is not a fair cutoff. It’s a money making racket, with the instructors subjectivity dictating the passes. All this does is take more money out of people’s pockets in this rip off of a country. Making it more and more difficult for young people to reach some of the most important milestones in life.
You don’t need more lessons, you need more practice.
12 lessons is more than enough to be introduced to the basics, practice them with feedback and have at least 2 fake tests.
The problem is, while you’re waiting for your test (which takes an incredibly long time) you either drive alone and pick up bad habits, or you don’t drive and get rusty..
Although very much a weak spot for abuse, your instructor knows far more about your driving after 12+ hours than a tester for a mere 20 minutes. Instructors should have weight in your scoring, now, what that looks like I don’t know.
The whole lesson and testing system needs to be updated. Make it simpler. Most new cars are automatic nowadays, so split it. Have an option to do a lisence with a manual transmission, but make the default automatic with an opt in for manual. Auto license needs say 8 lessons instead of 12. Simplify it.
People without a driving license should only be allowed behind the wheel while accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
And they should keep taking lessons until they pass their driving test, no ifs and buts!
My BIL is a driving instructor and he said beyond the 12 hours of driving lessons, it takes about 100 hours of driving to develop the muscle memory needed to drive confidently.
People rush the 12 lessons and go straight for the test. You need so much more practice.
Sounds just like a way to put more pressure on nervous candidates.
This is just going to make learners drive alone more.

Took me several tests to pass. In the absence of a proper system of auditing and recording the tests, to ensure there is proper standardisation in how people are being examined this is a bit wrong footed.
There should really be an appeals system and the ability to look back on a test and actually verify the veracity of a testers judgment of a driver.
Too many people flunk out on things like observation when a tester could be just not paying attention or making judgments based off “sizing someone up” in terms of demeanour or if they are “nervous looking”.
Test is identical to the one in the North. Fail rate up here is around 50% also. There is no mandatory number of lessons though. So it looks about right 50% fail.
Y’know lads, a lot of headlines and column inches are written about proposals when the actual law never materialises thanks to pushback by rural independents about the “death of rurdle Ireland”.
Wake me when you pass the law.

I failed twice, passed on third.
My second „failure“ was due to the NCT cert being out on the car I was given to use. I didn’t know this until the instructor pointed it out and we never left the test centre.
Thank god I wasn’t doing it now with all these scammy money grabbers making more ridiculous hoops to jump through.
Time of day and tester are far more important factors to passing than anything else.
Also id say like 90% of people with full licenses now would fail the test especially if its at a time of day with traffic in general Irish road users are too close to the car in front in traffic or pass to close to cars on the side of the road… dont even start on the shite use of indicators.
Like if the test is going to be that rigorous then everyone should be required to resit it every 4 years as a form of licence renewal… otherwise it’s pointless as the people already out there driving are not maintaining best practice.
I like this. If you’ve failed with the same’ish marks, something is up that needs correcting.
Although the long ass wait time for a test develops bad habits and it’s hard to correct during the test.

Bring this in, clamp down on insurance dodging and unaccompanied learners. Tired of people taking the piss – driving us a privilege that can be earned and lost. People are dying at an alarming rate on our roads.
It’s a strange system. I failed four times and when I passed on the fifth the tester was shocked it took me five times yet I have seen people on Reddit saying if it takes you that many tries then you shouldn’t be on the road.
At this point I’d argue I know the road better than most lol.
I failed 4 times and it was due to bad lessons, literally teaching me wrong for months and charging through the mouth for the privilege. Matched with zero feedback from the tests I was stuck in a cycle.
I changed my teacher and test centre, 2 lessons and I passed first time at the new centre.
All in all I had abiut 15 lessons when a quality teacher would’ve had me ready in half that.
How long should a test last? I know they can be highly variable which is not really ideal considering it’s supposed to be fairly standardised

Proper order, driving isn’t hard. I passed my test first go with no faults bar the theory questions.
My sister on the other hand did 5/6 tests before she passed, and she is still a shite driver.
If anything you should have to pass a mock test with an instructor before being able to sit a proper test. Not fair on people who can drive having to wait months for a test slot because eejits on their 4th, 5th, 6th test are taking up slots.
Do we allow some full licences to transfer across from other countries without retests? Lets say, certain common taxi drivers, would have the situational awareness of a blind housefly. Don’t believe they could ever pass a test.
I think Ireland is dissuading people from wanting to drive. Between the ridiculous process to get a test date due to limited availability and lesson prices (€120 for two hours at a minimum), all of this is quite outrageous.
Ireland is where you can’t get a driving license, can’t get on the property ladder and can’t rent a place at a reasonable price. It’s really handicapping a lot of adults and is turning into a place where you can’t be an independent adult.
First tackle the poor quality driving licences obtained out of state, the quality of driving is dangerous and roads are full of absolute amateurs driving GoCars etc, downvote ad naseum I’ll die on this hill

Interested how many learners are people who just renew the licence but don’t actually drive or own a car?
