    1. the publication provides no evidence for ancient use of charcoal therapy.

they report the presence of of a class of genes in ancient bacteria samples that provides resistance to cephalosporins.

They somehow, with no technical explanation state „we examine the structure of cephalosporins, we can see that they originate from a dye called Aniline“. i have no clue what theyre talking about here. aniline does not appear to be obviously directly chemically related to cephalosporin features, nor does a brief search reveal literature connecting cephalosprins to aniline, or aniline to intl1, the class of genes that provide cephalosporin resistance, or evidence that intl1s provide resistance to aniline.

They use this (possibly dubious and/or non-scientific connection) to suggest that the presence of the cephalosporin resistance gene implies resistance to the presence of aniline, which is present in coal tar.

They use that to suggest that human generation of coal tar drove selection of this gene.

coal tar is a byproduct of various coal manipulations. it is by no means in any way specific to the use of coal for medicinal purposes.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. F. Gülden Ekmen states in the media article:

“These findings demonstrate a remarkable continuity of medical knowledge“

„What we see in Zonguldak is that prehistoric people understood and used the natural coal deposits in their environment to treat disease long before recorded history.”

This it not reflective of what they report in the scientific publication and in my opinion, is so far from the truth to be considered fraudulent.
