It might be important to clarify what they mean here by „long-distance running“:

      >The study enrolled 100 participants between the ages of 35 and 50 who had completed at least five marathons or two ultramarathons and had never undergone a colonoscopy.

So „long distance“ in this context is not something like graduating from the 5K to the 10K. It is well, well beyond that. Even those of us who run a lot (including myself, who averages 10-15 miles per week) would likely be excluded from this demographic. This seems to apply only to the more extreme of runners.

    2. Interesting. It is very inflammatory. Lots of ultra runners consume huge amounts of sugar (and just food in general) which has been long connected. Though it doesn’t specifically say they looked at that, only that they controlled for diet.

      * *15% of participants had advanced adenomas (pre-cancerous lesions), compared to the expected 1–2% in average-risk individuals in this age range.*
      * *41% of participants had at least one adenoma.*
      * *The average age of participants was 42.5 years old – two and a half years below the recommended age for a first screening colonoscopy.*

This is an absolutely shocking result.
