Work on payments and there’s also a shift to experiences vs. Shopping as well.

They are too hard to shop at. If i go shopping I either want a shirt, a belt, a hat… whatever. Department shores do not respect that.
I am never going to go to a department store and think „Hey I want something designed by Eduardo Smith, but I dont care if it is a watch, a belt or a bike helmet.“
Department stores are organised for the latter. Stuff that.

I’ve never spent much at department stores when visiting.
Speciality retailers on the other hand. I’ll be back in November/December and hitting up a bunch of spots and spending a bunch of cash.

This current economy is simply not suitable for Japanese natives and it feels like the government is doing nothing but just to get foreign money and claim “There was progress” as an excuse to be in charge.
Department stores are indeed luxury but there are meant for local consumers. They aren’t “duty-free shops”. If you bar like 95% of the population from this it would be like labeling Japanese citizens are not worth to enjoy luxury items just for even a treat. We feel like damn peasants while foreigners enjoy.
This whole sanseito nonsense is partially related to this phenomenon. Japanese people are working overtime every week and their treatment is getting worse and worse. This yen-dollar balance is artificially kept by these lunatics.
We have like 20% inflation of prices since the pandemic and the LDP idiots say “Let’s give them 200 dollars and it should save them”.
