Nato is bracing for the start of Russian-led military exercises that are expected to feature hypersonic missiles and simulated nuclear strikes close to its eastern flank — two days after 20 drones violated Polish airspace.
On Friday, Russia and Belarus will begin their first joint Zapad (West) war games since the build-up to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The notional purpose of the manoeuvres is to practise the defence of Belarus against a hypothetical invasion by Nato forces, followed by a counteroffensive into the alliance’s territory.
The Belarusian defence ministry has billed the exercise as a low-key affair on a smaller scale than previous Zapad war games, staged mainly in the interior of the country and away from the [Nato](https://www.thetimes.com/topic/nato) frontier. Russian state media says only about 13,000 troops are likely to take part.
