During the bipolar Cold War, the European sides with the U.S to keep the Soviet away.
During the unipolar post-soviet world, the European favors NATO expansion to keep the U.S in Europe as a pacifier, so they don’t need to worry about Russia or going after each other.
In the current multipolar word, Europe just doesn’t matter that much to the U.S anymore. To Uncle Sam, the principle threat comes from China, it’s in the U.S best interest to have good relation with Russia and India in order to contain China. It makes strategic sense that East Asia is the most important theater to the U.S.
Europe on its own is not a political entity, countries have different security concerns. Giving its rich and bloody history, there will not be collective action without Uncle Sam as a pacifier. Keeping U.S limited involvement in the Ukraine war, and thus in Europe is only going to be a temporary solution, and not for long.
What comes next? When nationalism kicks in, some European will likely rebuild their relation with the Russian for their own interest. For the rest, now you are left with a piss off Russia.
