    1. Most drivers don’t rely on CarPlay.

says BMW, as I plug my phone in for the 400th time just to avoid listening to their robot lady yell NAVIGATION NOT AVAILABLE.

    2. > “We can see what our customers are doing, what kind of controls they’re using, in what kind of driving conditions they’re using them,”

Jesus Christ. Can one fucking company not spy on me?

    3. Question for the BMW exec (and other execs):

      – Is the map in your integrated GPS, always up-to-date (like Google Maps) without having me doing a cumbersome update with a USB key once a year?

      – Does it include live traffic just like Google Maps?

      – Can I listen to Spotify, Pocket Cast, and pretty much any audio service that might be available on my Android phone?

If the answer is „yes“ to all of those question, then maybe I’ll consider buying a car without Android Auto.

That’s the case for cars that come with Android Automotive, but guess what – those have Android Auto anyway.

    4. I don’t need CarPlay in my Renault Zoe to reach my destination but I sure as hell bought a usb wireless carplay dongle to have it without plugging in.

    5. Responsible-Bid5015 on

So one issue is whether this is total hours driven with Carplay vs numbers of users using Carplay.

I wouldn’t use Carplay all the time but for weekend trips, I would want it. So my usage may be low but I would still consider it essential.

    6. nj_tech_guy on

Everyone I know with an iphone and a car with carplay uses carplay and relies on it for navigation. I’m sure the same goes for android/android auto

Now sure, if you got rid of carplay, we’d go back to using our phones without carplay on a mount, and we’d be able to stream our music via bluetooth or listen to the radio. So sure, in a way, we don’t rely on Carplay. But we also sure as hell aren’t using the manufacturer’s GPS, it’s never not shit.

After renting a car with CarPlay like 10 years ago with it, it became a 100% requirement that my next car would have it. It’s the reason I didn’t get a Tesla which in hindsight was a blessing in disguise.

Now I have a new requirement that I need wireless CarPlay after my wife’s car has it and I’m stuck with the wired version.

    8. I will not buy a car without Apple CarPlay. That is absolute deal breaker for me. Car companies should stick to designing “driving machines”, they attempts to expand into software, especially into UI, would always fail.

    9. Silicon_Knight on

I dont really understand car companies. I bought a TESLA a while ago now, and at that point I figured the question for the auto industry was, „will Tesla figure out how to build a car faster than the big auto’s figure out how to build software?“. Still TESLA is making shit cars and that big autos are fucking around with software. JUST USE FUCKING CARPLAY FFS.

    10. Yeah. Speaking as a pretty loyal BMW driver, I very much rely on CarPlay and it is a fundamental aspect of my regular use of the car.

Outside of mechanical problems, connectivity problems with the phone/navigation/entertainment aspect of my time in my car is a massive frustration and inconvinience.

I am actually pretty satisfied with my car’s CarPlay integration and I think that BMW has been doing it right, which is why I’m surprised that there are people from that company talking it down.

We spend way more time on our phones, using our phones and relying on our phones. Why mess with it?

    11. Bullshit. I use it every single time I drive. I travel a ton and won’t rent a car without it. Everyone I know uses it as well.

    12. A new car without CarPlay is 100% deal breaker for me.

They say this because they want your usage data, they don’t want to loose the data to Apple.

    13. 61-127-217-469-817 on

I want to use Android Auto but it barely works in my Subaru Impreza. At some point I just stopped trying to avoid the frustration.

    14. SapTheSapient on

The only reason I don’t use CarPlay is that I use Android Auto.

It isn’t even that my car’s infotainment system is bad. I would happily use it if I didn’t have Android Auto (or CarPlay). Android Auto is just better.

    15. I use it every day. I put in my navigation to and from home into Apple Maps. It helps warn me of road hazards, detours, etc.

The onboard navigation on every vehicle I’ve owned is terrible. It’s a nightmare to update them. Even if that is possible, many require a subscription. No thanks.

    16. SecretSquirrelType on

Most drivers don’t use the navigation and other technology auto manufacturers put in their vehicle and much prefer Android or CarPlay which are more flexible, easier to configure, and more up to date.

Consumes update phones far more than they update cars.

    17. DippyHippy420 on

I just bought a new head unit just to have car play in my 30 year old car.

BMW, like most large companies are out of touch with the working mans reality.

    18. There’s no world in which I buy a car without CarPlay. Even in a modern EV with OTA updates I still anticipated Apple giving me a better experience with maps etc than the car does. Especially as Apple Maps now integrates with my the car HUD to display turns on the road etc

    19. And yet BMW has one of the nicest integrations of CarPlay that I’ve seen. Apple Maps in the instrument cluster, directions in the HUD, etc. Hopefully this doesn’t mean they’re abandoning it.

    20. I don’t want your gps or infotainment or monthly connection fees. We all have a device that does all of those things better and cheaper. We just need a consistent interface and big display. Anything else is mostly greed driven and does nothing to improve the product.

    21. Can’t speak for carplay, but Android auto is fucking wonderful. If these idiots shoot themselves in the foot removing these features, I’ll be sad. Being able to just… Get in my car and by the time I’m turning onto the road, my phone is connected, music playing where it left off, and ready to make calls or take commands at the push of a button on the steering wheel…

      Its just actually legitimately good.

    22. Myth: BMW’s don’t have turn signals.

They’re just often driven by inconsiderate assholes.

Fuck you BMW, the lack of CarPlay kept me away from a cheap ass used i3.

    23. My family just grew and I am in the market for a car. If the car doesn’t have CarPlay or Android Auto, I am simply not going to buy it. The infotainment system in a lot of modern cars is terrible and I don’t wanna figure it out.

    24. No CarPlay? Then no Car Buy because of two reasons: 1 – CarPlay is very convenient and I have used it for years, and 2 – By NOT supporting CarPlay, you’re telling me that you’re going to charge monthly for some or all of the service alternatives, like GPS, Music, and any other apps.

But back to 1 – With CarPlay, I have access to many of my phones apps FOR FREE. Google Maps, Apple Maps, Apple Music, Google Music, Spotify, and I can play and pause any other audio source I’m listening to like YouTube streaming the LoFi Girl channel. Weather radar apps, restaurants, and many more.

But BMW thinks I’ll be okay with their alternative, let alone pay extra for

    25. happyscrappy on

„People like paying monthly fees to keep their BMW NAV systems up to date“ BMW official says.

I think maybe this guy, who has data from 10 million cars to look it, isn’t realizing that the people who stop paying monthly have disconnected cars and so BMW doesn’t see that they aren’t using the NAV system from BMW anymore.

    26. pleachchapel on

Drivers hate convenient stuff that works with all their shit, they LOVE proprietary solutions which require a new & separate subscription for a quarter of the functionality.

    27. Opening-Dependent512 on

Why is BMW tracking my purchased, private vehicle usage. What else are they tracking/recording?

    28. Zer0C00L321 on

Wow. BMW just digging themselves into a hole nowadays. About to be the Boeing if the car industry

    29. iamacheeto1 on

I use CarPlay every time I’m in my car for probably 99% of the time I’m in the car

    30. mysticalfruit on

Guess I’m not most drivers.. I get in, plop my phone down on the charging pad and *use car play.*

    31. BoringArchivist on

CarPlay AND Android Auto are must haves for me. I’m less picky about my phone or PC, I’ve used just about everything, but having Maps, Spotify, and Hands free phone features are a must.

    32. Is Reddit listening to us? I was literally telling a coworker yesterday idc what’s in a car as long as it has CarPlay cause I rely on it so much.
