It is not that long ago that the constituent colleges of the University of London broke away and became universities in their own right. Something similar happened to the University of Wales.

So it is clearly wrong to describe this merger as the first super-university, and there are clear precedents for it to break up again.

Given the distances involved, I’d imagine scope for savings to be quite limited. Sure, some duplication can be removed, but while the new super-university needs only one Head of Paperclips on £500,000 a year, each of the remote (from each other) sites will need its own Deputy Head of Paperclips.

Some less popular subjects might be consolidated onto a single site but by definition almost, they will have small departments so again, not much will be saved in the long term, and payoffs will negate any savings in the short term.

Closing Greenwich altogether might be more attractive on paper as it is an expensive site, but you can’t do that because London SE10 looks better on the prospectus, especially for the lucrative overseas market.

The last gasp of a dying university. Kent has been fucked since Brexit stopped all the EU students, they were totally dependent on that money. They’ve had to resort to closing entire departments over the last few years as well.

I would say it’s a shame but it’s not really. The quality of teaching (on my course at least) was shit. I learnt more on my year in industry than I ever learnt in lectures. Won’t be sad to see them go

What a complete load.

So it’s not about a financial crisis and the students won’t notice any changes, but there have been job cuts, with Greenwich losing 15 full-time posts!

At the type example of a university that has expanded too far and too soon (the University of Bristol aka the suicide university) there’s a direct correlation between the expansion of the university, which has been exponential, and self-harm rates.

I doubt anyone needs me to say so but this is about cutting costs and providing poorer service in a sector that’s already about taking vast amounts of money from kids for very little in return.

Not really a first, „super uni“. Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds were historically colleges of Victoria University, before becoming independant universities.
