Poland has shot down drones over its territory after repeated violations of its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine.

The announcement came after Poland closed airports and launched an operation “to neutralise” objects that crossed over its border.

“During today’s attack by the Russian Federation targeting targets in Ukraine, our airspace was repeatedly violated by drones,” a statement from the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on X early on Wednesday. “At the request of the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces, weapons have been used, and operations are underway to locate the downed targets.“

Four airports, including the major Chopin airport in Warsaw, were closed according to the US Federal Aviation Administration, while the country’s armed forces said that military aircraft had been activated to ensure airspace safety. There was no official confirmation from the command that any airports had been closed.

Deputy defence minister Cezary Tomczyk said in a post on X that an operation had been launched “to neutralize objects that have violated and exceeded the border of the Republic of Poland” and that “we ask you to follow the announcements of the Polish army and the police.”

Prime minister Donald Tusk and President Karol Nawrocki had been notified, he said

    2. Good, anything that is military that Russia sends over NATO-territory should be shot down.

When Putin talks about attacking NATO, I think he means stuff like this. I don’t think he’s crazy enough to try and take territory or launch a large-scale offensive. However, they do have the means to launch drones over every once in awhile, along with hacking, jamming, and general sabotage.

    4. NATO should declare these incursions evidence of the necessity to take action to protect its airspace. To do so, it will start shooting down anything over Ukraine not identified as Ukrainian coming within X number of kilometers from NATO borders. From today.

Good. Screw Russia, screw Trump and screw all the evil they stand for.

Russia’s drone strike on Ukraine spilled over into Polish airspace with drones breached and shot down, airports closed, and jets scrambled.

Poland’s military is calling it an audacious test of NATO’s defenses, and U.S. officials agree, it looks like Putin is probing how firm our support for NATO members still is.

    7. While it may be perceived as an escalation, given the current global climate for the time being russian aircraft incursions into NATO territory should be perceived as a threat and not the typical „poking the bear“ that they do in jest every so often.

In other words, russian aircraft should be engaged the moment they enter NATO airspace for now and going forwards until things begin to cool off.

And while that may be perceived as an escalation, russian aircraft being allowed to come and go from NATO airspace is not a right, it’s a privilege, one that needs to be revoked.

    8. I mean if there is zero blowback to Russia for things like this, they will just keep pushing and pushing further.

There are rumours (they seem unfounded) that a NATO missile storage was hit. If this is true a kinetic response is necessary by next month at the latest. If they pussy out NATO is over.

Much improvement over the old method of denying that the drones or missiles were ever there. 👍

      Hell fucking Yeah!

Not one inch of NATO territory. Or future NATO territory(Ukraine).

Wished this happened sooner, but glad it’s happening now.

    12. The headline is crafted such that it implies the drones are Russian but does not say it explicitly. I notice the same pattern on other news about this incident.

I don’t think anyone knows what’s going on, if anything

What path did the drones take ?

Poland is quite far away from Russia… unless Belarus is allowing Russia to launch drones from within its borders.

Time for Nato countries to start sending 1,000’s of drone air tours over Russia. Let the Russians spend their resources on shooting them down.
