Don’t ease them. Get rid of them. The North American auto manufacturers don’t want to fulfill demand, and in fact want to get out from under any kind of mandate. If they don’t want to build them, they should have no say in any way on whether foreign EVs are sold here. If they go broke, well, I guess they earned that.
Reading his full comments… it is very difficult to parse if he said anything at all. Maybe they’ll consider lowering the tariffs, but not if they think it will affect literally anything else.
As statements go, the Housing and Infrastructure Minister’s one from a few weeks ago that the EV tariffs weren’t going anywhere seems a lot more definitive. Ag minister is just playing to his people, no one in farming has any reason to maintain those tariffs.
I just want the number to make sense. 100% means the government covered half the R&D and half the cost of production. If they did you’d think someone would have mentioned it by now
If people don’t want EVs (according to North American auto manufacturers) then why would we tariff them? The Chinese will find no market here for EVs.
But if there is a market here for EVs, it means the legacy North American automakers fooled themselves and killed themselves. They had years to prepare for the EV transition and instead of doing it, twiddled their thumbs and released a few concept cars here and there.
Take away the tariffs and or do something to incentivize the Chinese companies to set up a manufacturing hub here in Canada too.
