Israel’s attack on Hamas’s most senior leaders in Doha was claimed not to have killed them, but it might have killed the ceasefire negotiations to end the war in Gaza and Qatar’s role in those talks.

The emirate had already concluded that mediation between two obstinate and zealous parties, Hamas and Binyamin Netanyahu’s government, was bringing diminishing returns. Its reputation was battered in Washington by Israel’s allies for hosting Hamas, and the US had increasingly questioned the value of allowing Qatar to do so.

Qatari officials had long accused Israel of obstructing the talks to continue their war on Hamas in Gaza, as Netanyahu’s far-right coalition members are determined to do. Now that Israel has attacked Hamas in Qatar’s capital, the emirate may be tempted to wash its hands of the matter once and for all
