      As someone who is immersed in the GAA, I can tell you the biggest hurdle Gavin has to get over is how innately smarmy a git he is. FF seem to think he’s some beloved figure where even in the GAA that wouldn’t be a widespread opinion at all.

      I’m a Dub and I think it’s ridiculous a former Dublin GAA manager is the best FF can scrounge up. Its such a shite field, I don’t want to vote for any of them.

      Not opposed to him but he needs to actually explain where he stands on issues. If he’s just a get the Dublin and GAA vote plant with FF talking points he can forget it. He’s someone I think could run a good issue based campaign I just hope he does.

      I know it’s a largely ceremonial role but Michael D had a career where we knew his views before he was president and to be fair Heather Humpherys is having her record scrutinised.

      I really don’t like this pick. FF expecting people to vote for someone what we know nothing about.

      Anyone know where Jim sits on the abortion? A lot of his big backers are on the anti-abortion side within the party. Mary Butler, right beside Jim in the photo, voted against abortion, for example.

      Dublin centric politics is shiteeee, which is what this smells of.

      Genuinely think this is a stupid choice. Kelleher was on paper at least, one of the most qualified of any of the candidates discussed in the last few weeks. He has actually run something resembling a presidential election with the Euros. Has over 30 years of actual experience and is an FF member. None of those things apply to Gavin and thats just for starters.

      Gavin is basically a celebrity candidate with what appears to be little or no interest in politics, and his best examples of relevant experience fall into the category of barely credible.

      His entire candidacy comes across as something you might suggest when you’re brainstorming names, and you have 5 pints and no other ideas on you.

      He is, without doubt, an extremely capable and talented individual with some monumental achievements under his belt in the GAA. He just isn’t suited to this race or the job it could lead to.

      He’ll win by default because he will get votes from Dubliners, who want one of their own after multiple non-Dubliner presidents, and also votes from rural GAA communities who want one of the lads in power.

      As a Mayo fan I hate him but as someone who will be voting I’ll wait to hear him speak about politics before I make a remark. I know he’s FF’s choice but he could be a good one.

      I’ve no opinion of Jim Gavin as a candidate, seems most people here are the same at the moment.

      I for one am tired of the ever increasing frequency of political parties latching onto celebrities for campaigns.

      I don’t know anything about him outside of GAA.

      Does he have a background in political education ? Why do we accept this as the norm, having amateur inadequate public representatives?
