Uhhhhh, what? Ford was the one who authorized municipalities to put up speed cameras in the first place. If he doesn’t want them up, his government has the power to do that.
They should probably just redesign the road there at this point.
See if they can cut down a bump out curb and narrowed lanes
Bizarre overreach by the province into something that cities are very capable of governing themselves.
Speed cameras reduce speed, which in turn make for safer roads. The alternative is changing the road geometry, which most drivers *will not like* either.
But who am I kidding? The actual alternative is that we do nothing at all, but accept ongoing road injuries and fatalities because it’s easy and we like going zoom. Like, we know what the solutions are here — traffic engineers and associated urban design ppl have been talking about this for some time now. What’s needed is actual political will to see this stuff through.
Can you imagine the noise we’d be hearing if we tried to impose seatbelt laws now? We would have politicians cutting out their seatbelts on TikTok for show.
I don’t like this pro-crime message from Ford, just because a small minority doesn’t like a law doesn’t mean we should scrap it, that type of logic is how you get more crime. There’s plenty of people who shouldn’t have a drivers license because of poor emotional control, and the types who cut down these cameras are at the top of the list. We should be throwing the book at those people, not caving to their demands.
