      „Vote for the Fine Gael candidate or face the whip“.

      Why I gods name would any party work to help a candidate they would be competing against? FG have a presidential candidate.

      Pretty standard not to support an independent candidate when you have one of your own you’re trying to get elected.

      This is such a non story.

      Every major party does this when they have a strong candidate they want to back. SF, FF, FG etc all s
      Do this to not split the vote.

      All these parties have also had open votes when it suited. E.g when Higgens ran a second time most parties did open voting instead of putting real backing against a opponent.

      When FG have a strong candidate with a real chance of winning it makes perfect sense to have the party back that candidate only.

      It’s well with any Political party’s prerogative to make this decision. If people are not happy with FG about it, vote differently next time.
      There’s nothing anti-democratic about an elected party ensuring their candidate is in the best position to get nominated. It’s literally one of the advantages of getting elected in the first place.

      An open vote doesn’t mean they have to nominate their political opponents. It just means their councillors are free to nominate whom they want

      Look, just because America voted in a fucking embarrassment of a tangerine toddler does not mean we should go the same route.

      The mechanism of requiring people to have sufficient councillors to be nominated is a feature not a bug. It’s the same as their inane „free speech“ argument imagining they have the right to force their opinions and candidates on the populace no matter who inane or minority perspective.

      A Fine Gael-led council is not going to nominate a candidate for president when the party has one already. Not everything is a fucking conspiracy lads.

      Not sure why FG are getting flack specifically when all parties are going to do this.
