The ICC ever proving to be such a prestigious institution.
It’s an international court that hasn’t made any sort of binding decision; I’m sure Kier will turn himself in immediately.
If I recall correctly this was a Conservative deal that Labour just got over the line.
While I’m not a fan of a deal that basically has us hand over some land and then also pay rent for it so the yanks can have a military base. I’m pretty sure this is not a crime against humanity.
If I had a nickel for every time kid starver should’ve faced charges on crimes against humanity, I’d have at least 2 nickels.
That won’t go far, part of the benefit of the deal is it provides a legally competent answer to previous non binding decisions as it moves the issue from the UK to the appropriate sovereign entity. What they’re claiming is that the entity isn’t correct and only the indigenous people count, but they aren’t a country and they all technically have two countries and both have agreed.
So the Telegraph found an angle to report Starmer to the ICC so they could make another story about him.
They got what they wanted with Rayner, now that’s over they had to think up a new angle of attack.

I noticed that there’s no mention of legal action being taken *before* this deal to get the right to move back to Chagos while it wasn’t a „newsworthy“ story.
Is that something that ever happened?
This story feels like this is just a right wing group taking advantage of these people in an effort to embarras the government, not a genuine attempt to right a perceived wrong.
They say the actions that led to the base being built can’t be investigated, I don’t understand why but it also means the exact circumstances are unknown to the general public. Was a crime even committed back then? For all I know, the land could have been bought legally and the government of the time provided homes for all residents affected.
It’s just as possible that a crime was committed by the government back then. All I do know, is that I don’t know and nothing in the media has clarified that for me.

If it was a crime and the result was enabled to resettle….
This would also grant the same to Israel.
The main difference would be number of generations and overall origins (as there were some ethnic/religious Jews in mandate of Palestine and before.. even if many were expelled and had to flee).
