The job market is tight right now. I don’t think these people realise just how expendable they are.

This is a particularly out of touch demand given that it isn’t even related to pay or conditions, and they are asking for discounted travel on transport that is not even related to their employer, TfL. And suppose they end up succeeding in this demand, what’s stopping them striking again in a few years asking for entirely free personal rail travel?

I would like to see TfL not back down to the union’s demands, because I think they have overstepped. Not all strikes are inherently good. TfL are already treating their employees very well in terms of pay and contracted hours but it never seems to be enough.

At a time when many people are seeking work I think the public are rather unsympathetic to striking TfL staff this time around.

No sympathy for these fuckers. They’re never going to stop taking more and more, them striking is basically a tradition now.

So they want the same as people employed by TOC get (75% discount on mainline rail) which considering all TOC will come under Gov ownership over the next couple years isn’t as crazy as it sounds..

But TOC staff will then want priv discount on tube and shit and that’s never gonna happen

If I was able to hold the country to ransom like this, I’d be demanding a fuck ton more😂

    6. They, and a family member, literally already get free travel on the tube, busses etc. They have a highly competitive salary for very little skill. Now they want discount on all other rail?? AND they also want to work 4 days a week. Call it crab mentality but there comes a point where you’re just selfishly taking hostages.

I wish I had gone into this when I was younger, would have been laughing by this point. Easy pickings.

    8. By the same logic, as an employee of my local council, surely I should get a huge discount on my council tax?
(I mean seriously, whenever someone says “we pay your wages” to me, I have to respond that if you want to go down that route then as a council tax payer I’m effectively self-employed)

    9. Can we sack them and automate trains already? The vast majority of Tube trains are all automated driving but the driver opens/closes the doors. Not exactly a huge amount of work.

    10. It’s nice to see that more people are finally waking up to the fact these guys are utter parasites. I guess it’s hard to comment sOlIdArItY underneath a headline like this when the greed is just so blatant.

They can fuck off. Had enough of these jokers. They are already extremely well paid, have excellent work life balances and have 40+ days holiday to take.

      Absolute joke.

Let’s be honest, it pisses everyone off.

But my god wouldn’t we love a job where you earn bank, have a lovely pension and a union that literally would move head over heels for you for the most mundane complaint in the world!

    13. It’s been fascinating to see how far they’ve been able to take the absolute piss and the government always bends over to them. More power to them. I look forward to seeing how much more ridiculous and creative their demands get.

    14. We as well! It’s too expensive. Scotland scrapped the peak time tariffs already, why can’t the rest of UK do the same?

    15. lordofhousestewart on

They should be payed like premiership footballers..come on be fair. At least Ronaldo wages

    16. Drab_Majesty on

Hilarious, everyone pissing and moaning about tube drivers and automation. Says it all, really.

    17. I’ve always supported the unions and their right to argue (and strike) for better conditions, but the RMT, under Dempsey are taking the piss now.

Why not demand a helicopter chauffeur to and from work, and a grace and favour country home for every driver?

TfL need to stand firm on this.

Striking tube workers soon to be replaced by bus workers and AI.

      GOOD!

    19. They have really got to the point where they think their ability to cause disruption means they can just ask for anything they like and expect to get it.

    20. London’s transport network is one of the most expensive in the world.

I was in Seoul recently, it’s about 77p a trip, and Tokyo was 95p a trip.

Yet the TFL consistently runs at a loss, which the Government (taxpayer) then covers.

TFL already can’t afford to pay the staff it has even though they charge a lot for the service, yet these staff constantly demand more. If this was a private company it would go bankrupt and they would all lose their job.

Why do people keep parroting “why don’t you strike if you want better conditions for yourself too?” “We should be supporting them in trying to lift themselves up”

When the f was the last time the tube drivers supported anyone else apart from their own? It’s always us and small businesses that suffer for them, not the other way round.

We are not in this together, they will fight get what they can through their actions for themselves, there is no greater good. Most of our industries we work in can’t bring London to a standstill like this without it being dangerous, so striking wouldn’t have the same effect.

This thread is every single reason this country is a fucking mess.

Working class people trying to better their circumstances and situations being shit on by those either slightly inconvenienced for a few days or jealous of what they are asking for.

We should stand in solidarity and ask why they need such heavily discounted travel, why they can’t afford to live where they work etc. Not bemoan them trying to make their lives better.

    23. spank_monkey_83 on

F##k ‚em. They get paid hansomely for what they do. We are alll poorer and worse off than a 5yrs ago. Get over yourselves

    24. At this point it feels like their union purposely designed this strike and these demands to just make every single person who hears about it hate them even more
