Thing is that normal is relative.
What is happening overall is disgusting, illegal and morally reprehensible.
But I would argue that the MAGA-base is actually turning this into the new normal. It sucks, but without any consequences for their actions that is where we are heading

I don’t think anyone commenting has actually read the article. It’s a really good piece by Ezra Klein arguing that the Democrats should not vote in favor of the new budget in a few weeks, and should instead shutdown the government along with a robust messaging campaign.
Shut it down. Shut it the fuck down. Starve the beast, starve its children, starve its pets. Everything.

They should have stopped funding the first time.
The article goes through the results of rolling over at the end: nobody believes in the Democratic Party and nobody wants to fund it if they’re just going to constantly roll over.
Even worse, whatever you think about the candidates for mayor* in New York, the people in the party elected someone they want to lead them. And the party is turning against their choice.
And this is what happened to Bernie and other candidates as well.
So you have, in this case, an easy win: are you going to keep funding Trumpism?
And if you want to scope out just a little bit: do you want to use the weapon the GOP always uses against Democrats? Or are only Republicans allowed to defund and stop Democrats?
In the latter case, Republicans (notably Trump) have expressed wanting to stop this stupid system. But why would they if Democrats won’t use it?
And more broadly, how do you get people to think you’re doing something, anything, other than endorsing Trumpism and fighting the left who tries to oppose him?

Every democratic leader needs to be replaced with people who actually give a fuck. They’re okay with *anyone* as president as long as they keep their own position of power.

I read the entire essay. I couldn’t detect anything wrong in Klein’s arguments. He doesn’t claim to be all knowing. But he raised the keys point that what Dems have done up to this point isn’t working.

We all need to be setting up mutual aide/support networks to help allies, neighbors and friends. Start stocking food, medical supplies, etc.

Even Ezra Klien who is the poster boy for establishment dems and toeing the party line is advocating for a shutdown. If they dont use this leverage the elected dems are going to get wiped out in the primaries.

There’s a lot of good in the article. I don’t agree with everything he sets out. But I think this paragraph sums up a lot about what’s going on right now.
Conservatives want a strongman theocracy and they love their party because they are delivering it.

Ezra Klein is absolutely right about this. It’s a complicated take on a complicated issue. Please read it because if you’re upset with the status quo beige this-will-shake-out-well-if-we-just-sit-tight hand sitting of the Democrats, he shares your view and your anger.
My initial reaction (tamped down after reading) was to snap not because of the substance but because of the institution that published.
