Die Polizeistation von Minami verhaftete einen arbeitslosen Mann (59), weil er einen Spendenbox vom Toji Tempel, einem Weltkulturerbe (Minami Ward, Kyoto City), gestohlen hatte. Der Mann hat die Anklage zugegeben und erklärt, dass er die Schachtel weggeworfen hat.

This isn’t a sole case. Donation boxes at other temples and shrines have also been targeted. Most, however, target out of the way temples and shrines and not world heritage sites because there is less security.
Donation box are usually placed at the front of the shrine and are un-manned during the night. However, most temples and shrines nowadays have surveillance cameras.
