**Sep 3rd** – [Democrats Overperform in Florida as They Cruise to Victory in Two Elections](https://www.newsweek.com/democrats-special-elections-florida-2123662)

Democrats lost the April special elections in Florida, but over-performed overall:

      * [Republicans win — but underperform — in both Florida special elect
      ions](https://www.politico.com/news/2025/04/01/patronis-fine-trump-florida-00265436)

      >On Tuesday, he said in a statement that the results marked an overperformance by Democrats, given that Trump won each seat by more than 30 points in November and Fine and Patronis saw a 14- and 15-point victory, respectively.

And now have won a couple of seats in September, continuing to outperform in Florida:

      >Florida Democrats have increased the party’s share of the vote in two state special election victories.

      >On Tuesday night, RaShon Young and LaVon Bracy Davis won their elections for Florida’s House of Representatives and Senate, respectively. The proportion of the vote they both received was more than what former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris won in those seats in the November 2024 election.

    3. alabasterskim on

ehh these are deep blue state legislature races where Rs had no expectation of winning. A +18 overperformance is a lot, yes, but in a special election, there’s little to really extrapolate from this.

    4. Much-Anything7149 on

These are heavily Dem districts and the numbers are basically 60% for Kamala and 70% for these locals which I’m not sure says much. FL is still staying red, especially as MAGA areas like The Villages grow as is most of FL that’s not S FL or Gainesville.

    5. Headline is weird. Sure, that did seem to be the case, but turnout was less than %6 of the eligible voters.

    6. Tylenol_the_Creator on

We have got to stop with this “cruise to victory” mentality. Every election is a hard fight. Nothing is easy don’t fall for this narrative that removing GOP will be easy.

    7. Galactic-Guardian404 on

Republicans will amped up their election cheating even higher now.

    8. CyberForrest on

      No they did not.

Young’s election had a total of 9,765 votes. The last election (with same district) was 63,583 voters.

Davis is a bit harder to baseline since the the previous elections didn’t even have a Republican run, but the primary speaks. In Davis’ primary 12,883 voters showed up. Previously 39,495 showed up the prior elections cycle for the primary.

So both districts had far lower turnout than normal, and to make point clear about how this article is garbage, Davis’ district had a Republican get 27% of the votes (6713 votes) that republicans literally weren’t even running in for the past two cycles.

This isn’t over-performing; if anything it’s showing the democrats losing voter volume and their stronghold.

    9. Just a reminder we only have fucking Ronda because he won his original election by .4% or about 33,000 votes.

    10. wandering-monster on

Ah so they’ve finally remembered what it’s like to have Republicans in charge?

    11. Unusual-Potato8657 on

I love that when republicans have gotten so bad that gerrymandering doesn’t work anymore, so they just double down on attacking voting rights. /s

Its terrible I read a seemingly positive headline and my first thought is what response will it force?

    12. thatirishguyyyyy on

Thankfully, Davis is 46. She replaced a 76 year old woman who died due to knee surgery complications.

I’m sorry, but if my representative has to worry about dying because of knee surgery then they are probably too old to be serving as my rep.

I recently moved to Illinois from Florida but I wish her all the best luck.

When Trump is on the ballot republicans massively over perform. It’s almost like something fishy is going on
