Hijacking this light-hearted chat to raise a related bugbear of mine. The „Upstanding member of the GAA“ legal defense. Heard that mentioned yet again recently in reference to the driver of the car who was convicted of causing the death of Ronan Keatings brother.
Why is being a sports player – because of ones physical abilities – of any relevance in determining a crime or punishment. Are people who don’t play GAA somehow of lesser value to the community, or more likely to commit a crime? Shouldn’t being a talented singer, a chess player, a pigeon fancier, or a genealogy enthusiast all be relevant for mention.
I know where it comes from – the past when being in the GAA was evidence of some sort of national instincts or altruism, of good character, like being a member of the PTAA, or a regular mass goer.
But no place for it anymore. Any mention should be ruled out by the judge.
