Canadian Parliament would be empty if they started owning up to this.
It’s crazy not having the associated country name in the headline, no? My guess is Canada because of the one other post here at time of writing. England maybe? Granted it may be a slap in my own face for not having heard of the legendary Angela Rayner.
Imagine the American Presidents tax evasion!
This is the standard we should expect.
Wait ain’t this the lady always saying she was poor or something. And always bitching about the rich avoiding the taxes.
Imagine if every politician resigned for not paying enough tax parliament would be a ghost town.
Someone has dirt on her and this is just an excuse to avoid the real reason she is leaving.
She didn’t resign because of this, she resigned because whoever is pulling Keir Starmer’s strings wants her out.
Confused by the wording so I seek britbong advice for once.
How can she pay „not enough“? Is this just a word for fraud or did she literally just not pay her dues? If it’s the latter – is there something fraudulent in itself missing a payment? This article makes it sound like something you can forget or unable to pay, which doesn’t sound that bad per se
Always good to remind yourself that regardless of left or right, the political class are all scumbags and you should hate them all.
It was inevitable as you can’t continue in that role after dodging tax.
You can tell she deliberately did it because she tried to throw her conveyancing solicitor under the bus for it. For those that don’t know your solicitor doesn’t advise on tax issues. That’s not their job.
Ok thanks but….is she now gonna pay the tax?
I wish the US had this standard.
They say power corrupts. But money does just as good a job.
I think this is what politics looks like with the grown-ups back in charge.
We had 14 years of conservatives, and the last few years were just scandal after scandal with no real consequences.
Really, it’s not something that should be quite as shocking as it is for a politician to step back after a scandal like this. This is just how it should be.
These people are not alm the same. Conservatives survived much worse scandals, we have guys who have been hiding money in offshore accounts.
These people are not all the same because the decent politicians take the hit, take the punishment, and, in this case, resign
Please mention the country and not just deputy prime minister, this is world news not UK news
At least she resigns. Here in Spain our governments never do it, I would be a wet dream to see it
I can see clearly now the Rayner’s gone
I think the main takeaway here is that the tax code should be simplified. Here’s an MP who got tripped up by it while trying to comply with the law.
This happens to loads of people – most don’t lose their jobs and honestly Revenue in Ireland is pretty forgiving about these things. But it would be better if the rules were made less confusing for everyone.
Nice to see someone do the right thing for a change
She should have blamed AI.
Hell! In ‘Murica we MAKE people like this President!
I had very high expectations for Angela Rayner, not only for her profile and background, but work in opposition in the previous governments. Quite disappointed that once again, the politicians you get to trust and expect to do better will also be corrupt.
No wonder no one trusts politicians anymore, and this will only give strength to the openly dishonest ones.
It feels like an eternity where a politician actually takes responsibility for what they did wrong and resigns. Not taking any fault from her, but we’ve seen politicians leak military operations to reporters, deny and falsely describe evidence that related to the world worst pedophile, abuse and fraud of political donations and much much more and politicians nowadays just bat it away as fake news.
They are all as bad as each other.
So she’s resigned; a meaningless gesture. She can earn more in the private sector, and if she so desires will find her way back into the upper levels of politics at some point. No real consequences for her.
She did the right thing here but if you read the full story it’s certainly not tax evasion and it’s described by a legal tax expert as a miscalculation from the solicitors who handled the purchase.
However she did the right thing as a member of the government and resigned.
