tldr; Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that 40% of the company’s daily code is AI-generated, with a goal to increase this to over 50% by October 2025. Armstrong emphasized responsible use of AI, requiring human review and understanding of AI-generated code. His comments align with a broader industry trend of integrating AI into software development. However, Coinbase’s stock (COIN) fell 0.5% following the announcement, reflecting potential investor concerns. Armstrong has faced criticism for firing programmers resistant to AI tools but remains committed to expanding AI’s role at Coinbase.

By developers who then have to review it and then add it to the codebase.

    3. I would suspect that all of this code is not on the security side of things. Disaster otherwise.

That’s a massive number. If true, this could massively accelerate development across the crypto industry. But how will audits and security work with so much AI involved?

    6. Executives love the sound of this. Engineers know the truth. The garbage AI can spew out if you let it knows no bounds. Code quality takes a hit without a doubt. The tech debt this creates also accumulates. 30%-45% of AI generated code also has security vulnerabilities and for a platform like coinbase holding crypto they cannot afford 1%. AI is great at describing code bases and with a lot of hand holding can be useful but when I see execs push for more code to be created by AI I just 🤦‍♂️

Feels odd after just getting off the phone with Robinhood about their AI. They use an AI fraud detection system, which froze my account permanently because I sent funds to my cold wallet. After telling them they made a mistake, they said the decision is final and that their “team in the backroom” couldn’t be spoken with about it. I said it’s because their team in the backroom is an algorithm they don’t even understand. They hung up on me. Apparently that struck a nerve 😭
