Hard to disagree.
With Poilievre and Eby in agreement and showing that there is support for ending the TFW programme across party lines, one wonders how this will impact the forthcoming Liberal budget. If at all.
It may be that supporting and defending the TFW program is the path the Liberals take in order to distinguish themselves from the NDP and the Conservatives.
I think it desperately needs to be majorly reformed to focus on the people who are already here contributing. I’m an immigrant (no pitchforks please). I’ve been here 6 years and got a Canadian STEM PhD, speak both English & French and am applying for PR. This is my home and I want to become Canadian.
It’s significantly faster to apply from India having never lived here than it is to apply internally, having already built a life here and contributed to Canada. It makes no sense.
Good, the TFW program was always a horrible Liberal and Tory program, meant to help corporate Canada exploit migrant labour, and depress wages, particularly at the bottom of the labour market.
It’s time to roll it up. It never worked as sold and never will, and all avenues of patience and understanding have been abused and exhausted.
The western NDP’s are the ones who haven’t actually lost their way and been captured by academics and far left “no borders” weirdos. They haven’t forgotten they are *labour* parties.
And then they get pilloried online as conservatives and turncoats lol.
This now gives the Liberal party cover to flip on this issue.
Wouldn’t be surprised at all if it came out that Carney asked Eby to say this.
There’s nothing wrong with the TFWP in principle, scrapping it is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It’s been administered and enforced horribly, I cannot defend it there, but as a pathway to bring in net contributors like academics, healthcare workers, engineers, etc it’s certainly in the national interest to keep it after making the necessary overhauls.
This kind of populism will destroy the Canadian economy. Why are there Temporary Foreign workers?…..because without them, there is no one to do the jobs. This is the inconvenient fact. Look at the US, farms and factories are suffering labor shortages everywhere. If anything, there aren’t ENOUGH temporary workers. How else will Canada possibly build 450,000 homes per year? …..only around half that many are built NOW.
Anyone who has ever used the temporary foreign worker program knows that it’s significantly easier to hire locally – it’s long, expensive and risky to bring in temporary workers. The program can only be used for jobs where there is a labour shortage locally.
You have the CPC wanting the TFW program to come to an end. You have the NDP joining in on it too. It’s been politicized for a while and will be as long as people are frustrated with the state of the economy, or how difficult it is to get hired compared to previous years.
Even if the business lobby makes a case why they need it, something needs to be done to at least control abuse. It will become politically unpopular to continue to defend it in its current state.
Nuances to the issue or not, there are literally jobs on the Canadian Job Bank site under “LMIA” review that shouldn’t be. It’s hard to believe the company hiring can’t find anyone to be a senior software developer….the amount of unemployed tech people in Toronto that will gladly fill this job vacancy, makes no sense to be approved for a TFW.
