This is crazy, I was here just three weeks ago.

Apparently they had derailments before due to lack of maintenance but never resulted in deaths or injuries.

Ngl, that’s not only shocking for the World but here in Portugal, 15 dead people? That’s fucking crazy, RIP to them

How in the name of god does something like this not have automatic emergency brakes?

I rode that thing when I was there. Hotel was by the top. That’s crazy.

    5. Cable snapped and because both cars work has counterweight to each other, both crashed.

The lower car only crashed around 2m (6ft.) then moments later (probably <1min) the higher car crashed on the curve.

      15 dead, 18 injured.

This is pretty crazy. I live in San Francisco and if something like this happened on Hyde street on a cable car…wow.

    7. I used this every day when I was there earlier this year, I remember liking how much care the drivers seemed to take in running such old machines.

I kind of assumed they’d have put in some kind of failsafe over the years though.

Dafuk is a funicular? As a Canadian I’ve never heard this word in my life

    9. Oh god. I rode that last year and considered riding it again in a month when I am there. I guess not this time.

    10. I’ve taken this funicular and walked past it several times. What a tragedy. Such a fun experience turned into a horrific event.

    11. Were all the victims the passengers of that one cart or some passersby as well? Never been there and I can’t wrap my mind around the „logistics” of this freefall. Horrific, it probably couldn’t handle all the summer traffic.

Just yesterday, I was just riding a funicular in Psychonauts 2, and Raz was making puns and pointing out how slow they things are

    13. Jesus I just got home from Lisbon yesterday. Hotel was a couple min walk away from this. Wanted to go on but the line was too long so we kept it moving.

For anyone else who didn’t know, a funicular is a tram that’s pulled up a hill by a rope or wire.
