      Yes.Have to give a chance for example female Garda to use necessary force, when there is no other way.

      No! It’s Ireland – we should arm them with marshmallows and ensure they can be heavily sued if they use them. That’s how we do things here.

      They struggle to conduct a simple drugs search legally, how can they be trusted to a teaser within the law.

      Before Gardai are issued with more non lethal weapons, they should be forced to cooperate immediately with Fiosru (formerly GSOC), and be subject to criminal proceedings for obstruction if they don’t.
      Likewise with the farce of roads policing, where many simply refuse to do the job and are unmanageable.

      Yes, as long as the right training in deescalation and usage is given first. Garda training quality is pretty bad compared to other European police services.

      This was found in an assessment done by an independent organisation.

      We also have one of the lowest police officer per capita rate in Europe, its madness that they are not all already equipped with tasers and body cameras.

      Hold on a second r/ireland keeps telling me Ireland is a safe country and becoming safer every year. Why would gaurds need tazers?

      I wouldn’t be mad on the idea. I don’t see any reason for the Garda to be more armed than they currently are. And should there ever be a credible threat them, then that would be the time to further armament. Fully agree with other comments, if it were to come to pass it should be the case that no taser is discharged without adjoining body cam footage being taken. 

      Beyond that, John Oliver did a section about this topic a few months ago and it’s worth a few minutes of your time.

      To anyone with a heart condition or various other medical conditions that might not be immediately apparent tasers are a lethal weapon that can very easily kill on the spot.

      They should be considered a firearm akin to a pistol and require the same training and strict regulation on how and when they are used.
      They aren’t „safe“ to deploy like in the movies and should be treated the same as guns.

      They should carry tasers, guns, and have cameras. I’m sick of Ireland being policed like it’s the 1950’s.

      I’d be in favour of body cameras and tasers.

      Body cameras would be good for all that “he’s a good lad, just down in hard times” crap that gets used all the time.

      And tasers seem good but I’ve watched enough of those American police YouTube videos to know that they don’t always works, seems like a 50,50

      Probably better than nothing

      1) Garda should carry tasers – with proper training

      2) They should all be wearing body cameras

      3) They should all be drug tested

      Body cameras first. Then write it into law that the un-edited footage is considered public material, and always available with severe penalties of at least dismissal if the camera’s off while on duty. Otherwise I don’t trust them with a fucking pencil.

      its weird to see you are discussing and even opposing arming Gardai with Tasers while everywhere else ( apart from UK) officers carry real guns…

      A taser can kill, but so can a baton. I’m far less concerned about giving the Gardaí tasers than I am about giving them body camers that can’t be switched off or „accidentally overwritten.“
