I didn’t know the Romans had got all the way to Australia.
I had the opportunity to visit Apollonia near Fieri a few years back. Wandering around the place you could just scratch underneath the surface of the earth and find pieces of mosaic, or parts of marble statues. Very wild and undisturbed. Albania has some real treasures and it’s a lovely wild country especially if you go up to the mountains.
The discovery was made in the area called „Fusha e Gurrës“ in Strikçan, Bulqizë. The tomb dates back to the Roman period, specifically the 3rd-4th centuries AD.
The monument is large: about 9 m long and 6 m wide, with a burial chamber 2.4 m high. It is divided into three rooms: the entrance with stairs, the antechamber and the burial chamber.
Based on the structure and decorations found (stucco with geometric motifs), it is assumed that it is a mausoleum—a monumental and sophisticated tomb.
A bilingual inscription in Latin (Roman) was discovered on the monument, dedicated to the buried person, named Gellianos, and the god Jupiter. This is the first such inscription found in the Dibra area and one of the few in Albania.
And here I thought people actually lived there now………
