This seems incredibly misguided. Firstly, if your aim is to stop protesters attempting to create a link between the national flag and an anti-immigration message, then taking actions which get these linked in a national newspaper seems like a terrible idea. Secondly, these protesters are idiots – it’s the national flag – it already has a well-established meaning and it’s nothing to do with immigrants. Just leave the flags and all will be well!
Honestly it maybe a better approach to adopt the tricolour to reflect the true values of Ireland. Inclusion, love for all, speaking out against hate, etc.
No need to see it as linked to Anti immigration sentiment, people give symbols the meaning they want them to have and you can too!

I know it’s an attempt to pervert our national flag for nefarious means but still it’s our national flag. I’ve talked to some people that think it’s amazing that these are being cut down to stop the far right.
When I questioned how they would feel if the council were cutting down Palestinian flags I was answered with „that’s different!“.
a consistent approach is required to not give these lads more airtime.
From the council’s reasoning it’s either all the flags stay or none of them.

The tri colour belongs to all people of Ireland it shouldn’t be seen as a symbol of the far right if they remove our national flag then no flags should be allowed

Whatever anyone says, that flag has been flown across Dublin for 100 years. It’s our national flag for God’s sake. It’s a really bad precedent to set, and also just plays into the hands of the racists. Do we really want to follow the example of the UK where protestors are getting arrested and free speech is being shut down?

Best approach here is to lean in. The far right geebags want the flags taken down so that they can wail about how „we can’t even fly our own flag“. Instead, the council should celebrate it and if anything try out the tricolour front and centre with any upcoming events. Prove that the flag represents all elements of our society and take what little power these dipshits have.

They’re all around me here in Finglas. I wouldn’t mind but they’re all so cheap. Most of them are severely sun bleached and many are now tatty and ragged. These „patriots“ couldn’t even invest in decent quality flags
The media and DCC are being foolish here. They all fell over themselves to put to other flags – trans, Palestine, Ukraine, etc. Cork CoCo has Pakistan flags up FFS
If they were politically savvy they’d lean into this and embrace it. Fighting it will make it a bigger issue than they think it is

Sorry lads but “Unauthorised Tri Colour Flags” in our own country is an absolutely ridiculous headline. We fought for the flag, it should be flown all day every day. We should be proud of our flag. It doesn’t matter who’s flying it. It has been flown in Dublin for years, if people want to put more up, let them. THIS IS IRELAND. The Irish flag should be flown.
Best way to get more flags is by telling people that they can’t have more flags

This is falling right into their trap.
The idea we’re shy about displaying the Tricolor is nonsense. This recent spate of flag fucking is an attempt to copy racist Brits in creating an intimidatory atmosphere.
Simple solution. DCC flys it and underneath a banner saying this flag belongs to everyone, not fascists.
Take them down, say „These are cheap flags, mass-produced overseas and are an environmental hazard so they have to be removed. We will open a tender to purchase high-quality flags made in Ireland in order to display pride in our country“.
I despise seeing the far right and their supporters using our flag they way they do. It’s disgusting.
But rather than completely banning the flying of it I think we should start flying it everywhere and at every event so that it’s true symbolism is seen and understood.
We need to take it back from the extremists and show that it’s not a symbol of racism and divide but of peace, unity and national pride.

These are conversations that are not had in any other country but ours. If Spain or Portugal or Japan start putting up flags of their national country we wouldn’t bat an eyelid and just put it down to them been patriotic, but for some reason in Ireland we have to be careful of offending anybody even if it means waving the Irish flag. The flag doesn’t belong to officials, it belongs to every Irish citizen. Do we stop GAA, or rugby from unauthorised use of the national flags?
