These measures aren’t intended to „reduce crime,“ they’re intended to occupy areas of the country where Trump’s political opposition is most prevalent. Where federalized troops can „crackdown“ on protestors and dissidents.

And this is all while Republican governors of their own statistically high crime states are sending troops to D.C. to bolster Trump’s authoritarian takeover of US cities. but at the same time, these Republicans are hesitant to ask Trump to send the military into *their* cities.

And like every other draconian policy of this administration, these actions do absolutely nothing to address the underlying issues and contributing factors to high crime rates.

Mobilizing and sending the military into densely populated cities does not even begin to remotely address the socioeconomic components; the lack of community support structures; the problems with law enforcement; the systemic injustices within our legal system; the dismantling of social safety nets for the poor and underprivileged; the historical neglect of marginalized groups and the segregationist policies that continue to impact vulnerable, minority communities to this day—which are all factors that predominantly influence crime rates.

Outside of being an effort to centralize authoritarian control over democrat-run areas, this whole mess is a political stunt meant to produce the *illusion* of safety

These tactics are taken straight from the fascist playbook. Including the current use of divisive rhetoric from Trump and his allies who are trying desperately to justify the future occupation of cities like Chicago by stigmatizing and scapegoating minorities and immigrations and by spreading fearmongering messaging.

Pritzker said the head of the Illinois State Police over the weekend was informed by Gregory Bovino, a senior Customs and Border Protection official who led aggressive immigration raids in Los Angeles, that immigration raids in Chicago would soon begin.

When is the national guard going to stand up and refuse to follow illegal orders? What illegal orders *won’t* they follow?

Texas has 7 cities with a violent crime rate higher than Chicago’s.

It was illegal when he did it in California (a federal judge confirmed), so it will be illegal when he does it in Illinois.

This is going to be an unpopular conversation, but…

The military—if they follow the President’s illegal orders—is in danger of squandering the love many of us have for them and returning to a darker period when (for example, during and after the Vietnam War) they were despised by a significant number of Americans. They’ve spent three generations rehabilitating their image.

The President is issuing illegal orders, and if our military isn’t saying no, they’re committing a crime on US soil, and I I’m not going to want to hear their excuses for why they don’t want to refuse. “We were just following the orders of the commander-in-chief” sounds very fancy, but illegal orders are illegal—period.

We worship our military in this country—so much so that other western democracies think we’re weird—but if they’re willing to follow *these* illegal orders, we should expect them to follow *any* illegal orders the President gives them, and that’s rather terrifying. Those of us who’ve held out hope that our military officers take their oath seriously (to defend our Constitution from *all* enemies, foreign and domestic) might be surprised to find that they don’t.

I guess time will tell, but that time is coming fast, and it’s going to be upon us before we know it.

And when all the smoke clears from this—years from now when Trump is no longer in office—I want prosecutions for any officers who didn’t refuse an illegal order. Make examples of each and every one of them so it never happens again.
