I think Mr. Carney is in a difficult position. Of course, he wants to push back against Trump, but he also has to consider Canadian consumers and domestic industry. Trump is not a man of his word, and I wouldn’t trust any agreement we make with his administration. For Canada, the key is to diversify trade, reduce internal trade barriers, and attract capital. I didn’t vote for Mr. Carney, but I’m confident he can make progress.
We have been signing deals with many non US countries. He is moving our resources to other markets, but that takes time.
That is the only way to truly separate from the US without massive upheaval.
He really doesn’t. We’ve been pushing hard into other countries lately. All you have to do is stall Trump as much as possible (which is pretty easy) while setting up other agreements and also building up trade infrastructure.
Fight him how? We going to get him and Trump on horseback and they can joust?
People need to grow up and face reality.
If you have a neighbour that is annoying you, you use whatever legal methods are available, maybe put up a camera, occasionally try to talk to them and then after a bit of time you just stop talking. This is no different.
Carney has an entire country to worry about and many different interests who will be impacted heavily based on what actions he takes. He’s doing what he can.
It’s interesting to see the narrative change. When Carney had full tarrifs up and more so in the beginning of all of this, the alternative narrative was that carney was being to unrealistic and belligerent in attacking the US, harming Canada in the process. This usually was the Daniel Smith argument, that we shouldn’t be trying to fight them head of as that would crush us and only make things worse. Carney is then lamented as using Trump for popularity at the expense of the nation.
Now, it is that Carney is too weak and isn’t doing enough direct combat, and as such he’s weak and ineffective.
Either way, he’s fucked in that there will be a loud crowd that will alternate between these two narratives to always make it seem like it’s his fault, even if in reality it’s pretty obvious Trump is just Trump & every world leader is trying to react on the fly
I like a good fight like a lot of people, and I think we should stick it to them. I wasn’t happy when we dropped reciprocal tariffs; but I think Carney is being pragmatic here. As far as the tariffs go, I think a good number of Canadians are boycotting American products and covering most of what the tariffs were doing anyway.
The end goal is to get us away from American dependence. I think he’s doing good work to get us there. There is still so much further to go, of course.
Who has it all figured out? We’d like to hear your solution. Do the least short term harm while diversifying for the future. Canada’s not going to win a war of escalation with the US.

Question 1: why? Canada can do a lot and is doing a lot that simply de-risks from the U.S. and creates other opportunities.
Question 2: how? Tarrifs (taxing our own consumers) is at best double-edged. At worst, self-destructive. Assume withdrawing from current agreements whether trade or security are equally short-sighted and destructive.
Trump is 1.5 years from mid-terms and likely 3.4 years from not being in office at all.
Canada is fourish years from a general election. The most heavily tariffed commodities are inelastic and have very long shelf lives. There really is no rush here.
Carney said during the leadership debate that matching dollar for dollar tariffs wouldn’t be his strategy. He kept the tarriffs on those not covered by CUSMA.
I consider the following possibility. Carney is fighting Trump but not speaking openly. Making announcements where you make dreams and other arrangements outside the US would just provoke Trump. I understand such deals if there are any must be announced eventually. But I see no value in provoking Trump if we don’t have to. Not backing down, not giving in, just not saying provocative things.
I used to work for a place like that. The worst answer I got wasn’t “no”, it was “yeah we’ll get on that right away” (not). That’s what I’d tell Trump. Yeah, we’ll get on that right away.
