Truth is, there is enough text in Minecraft, and RPGs to read. Smartphone games have a heavy dose of text as well. Reading a book itself would mean they have time outside of being beatdown by school, club activities, juku, language school, sports clubs, studying, and living their lives. The only free time I could see them having is during transit; on the bus, on the ride to grandma that lives an hour or so away, on the plane. I typically see them studying on the train though.
Being a Japanese kid is tough, on top of having to conform to societal norms.
I still have nightmares about being late to tests in Jr. High.
