He’s a populist and he is accessible for voters…he listens and talks to anybody but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is on your side. He makes statements and policy proposals that are the on people’s minds at the moment, or are popular things that people don’t like. For instance, a buck a beer, his statements onTrump and tariff’s, addressing people’s frustration with government services like health, education, etc. He says a lot of things that people like to hear but he really doesn’t deliver.
I don’t think he is even that popular. It’s just that there is such a vast space left open by the other leaders and parties not managing to rise up.
Reddit, especially the bizarro world of r/ontario would have you think he’s the most hated person in the province. And that nobody agrees with the Ford Government’s policies. Despite his three majority government election wins.
Never forget the opinions on Reddit doesn’t reflect the actual real world of Mainstream ordinary middle-of-the-road Canadians that never visit here.
One of the largest factors that arent related to Ford himself is that the opposition is not notable or polarizing.
Take the CPC for example, Poilievre is adored or hated by a lot of the electorate. Compare that to the ONDP who are liked by a section of the electorate however most dont have strong feelings either way on them.
Also, the way he governs is not like most politicians. Despite him having a ton of policies that are not beneficial he will backtrack and give off the appearance of listening to the voters.
I’m going with it. It probably has a lot to do with the media letting him of the hook and all his corruption getting unnoticed
He is middle of the road on almost everything. He has also done little proactively while in office so there are fewer glaring failures. What would be his legacy policies? There is not much, aside from spending less $.
I think he’s good add seizing/milking the opportunity when it arises and using the trade war and rudderless opposition to garner to extra support he needs to maintain majorities etc. I wouldn’t say he has unprecedented popularity since he generally still has a good amount of controversy & criticism directed at his government from voters and the media, but he knows how to manipulate the political discourse to distract from the controversies to prolong his government’s lifespan just enough that he can sail off into the sunset after a decade or so in power while leaving the electoral reckoning for his successor to deal with.
He’s also been smart enough to at least maintain a good working relationship with Ottawa, which keeps the 905 voters happy and federal transfers pouring in.
Liberals were incredibly bad but centre right voters refuse to vote left so Doug looks great in comparison.
60% of Ontario voters liked privatizing healthcare (liberals did it as well) are afraid of making corporations pay a living wage because it will make things too expensive (stuffs getting expensive anyways) and think everyone being out for themselves is better than a better community which supports each other (which makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.)
So the choice comes down to who would you rather have a beer with to most of Ontario voters and yea that’s Doug. The liberals offerings look like party poopers compared to frat boy Doug.
