The elimination of Abu Obeida, delivers a heavy psychological blow. In Gaza he was more than a spokesman. His masked face became an icon across the Arab world, his speeches were treated like commands, and children even dressed in his likeness, with posters and imitations of him appearing from demonstrations in the West against Israel to rallies in Iran against Israel during the war.
This also mean that for the first time in its existence, there is not a single well-recognised Hamas figure alive in Gaza.

I know I should take this all seriously, but that’s a very entertaining mental image, and a heck of a thing to just drop in the middle of the news article.
I suppose it’s also technically true to refer to the scattered funds as „stolen“ by the locals after the strike, but it still feels weird in the context of an organization like Hamas. Kind of like saying that bystanders „stole“ the cash scattered in the aftermath of a meth lab explosion.
