Never been a better time to be decrepit in the US.
This has been a societal problem for a long time. Grandparents used to play important roles in the family, and would live at home with the younger generations until their deaths.
People think nuclear families are traditional, but they are one of the first steps in dismantling the family. Now even the concept of a family home has been eroded.
Mass graves for the homeless have been ’normal‘ in cities like New York for many decades.
Although that’s probably news to some Americans.
Capitalism doesn’t care about feelings
The throwaway society isn’t limited to just material things. Once you’ve fulfilled your role as cheap labor, you’re discarded.
We hear all the time about how the boomer generation is so much wealthier than ours. Evidently it isn’t all of them, just some of them.
the sad thing is we make our elders suffer more than our pets. nobody blinks an eye when we euthanize our animals because of quality of life issues but keep poor grandpa in a bed crapping himself until he finally passes on his own. i know how horrible it sounds, but i remember a friend’s elderly mother saying she felt like an „overdue library book“ for a few years before she finally died terrified in an institution because she told her caregivers these feelings. legalizing/assisting suicide would solve a lot of our society’s problems.
the rise in geriatric „vanlife“ youtubers is really sad as well. they are literally just homeless trying to suppliment their social security with youtube revenue and donations.

As with the homeless, not everyone is a kind, caring person that just happens to be down on their luck. Assholes and jerks get old too. Many times they were abusive to their children (who would normally care for them) and have worn out their welcome everywhere they had a chance.
