somehow FF chose the worst candiate
Great news.
A great Dublin man who has caused heartbreak for many around the country.
I really hope the cameras are with him when Jim „Drive for Five“ Gavin goes canvassing in Kerry and Mayo.
He has a great CV. Saving Gaelic football is a great achievement on its own. And not having been a politician may be a positive in the election.
But as was pointed out on the IT politics podcast he can be a bit flinty in interviews and that may not work during a campaign.

Name recognition and GAA background will appeal to some people, though not something I care about. And an otherwise solid/stolid background in the army and civil service.
You’d hope for better candidates though.

Out of the current pack that have announced they’re running, he’d be the one to get my vote. Has a great record of serving the country throughout his career, and also provided a lot to sport too. Seems a lovely guy who gets things done.

There will be a lot of the people (some with accounts on this sub) frantically looking for bad stuff to post about Gavin now.

Jim Gavin would be an excellent president. I’ve been privileged to see him in a somewhat private setting with his Dublin squad and the way he mentored and coached these guys about small little things about being respectful and grateful was really nice to see.
It was mentoring beyond football. I could see him being an antidote to the toxic influencers-role-models that infest today’s male ecosystem.
It was obviously a small snapshot of the man but it definitely left a last impression on me.
He has a strong record of public service and has generally been a fairly consistent public presence.
I like Jim Gavin, he seems like a solid guy with a good head on his shoulders. But being a pilot and GAA manager does not mean that he has a good understanding of international relations and how Ireland projects itself on the international stage. If you compared a Jim Gavin presidency to a Michael D one there is just no contest. I cant see any advantage to Ireland by electing him, his Presidency would just end up being him saying whatever the Dept of Foreign Affairs tells him to say making him a puppet President. He would be led by the DFA rather than him leading the DFA like Higgins does.
You could actually argue that Bertie would be a better President than Jim Gavin as he does have a lot of name recognition internationally for helping to deliver peace in Northern Ireland. And I do not want to see Bertie as President but he would be a better one than Jim Gavin.

Jim Gavin would be an incredible president. He has an incredible CV beyond GAA, seems to have been highly competent at everything he’s turned his hand to.
What’s he done? Insulting decision.
Won a few cups.
What’s his opinions on things? No one knows where he stands on issues.
Where is Royston Brady these days?
That Carberry one got into the European Parliament because of horses. A far more crucial and impactful position than this
Michaél Martin can’t even organise an internal Presidential selection program process.
He was a prick in the Air corps, he’d be an even bigger one as President.
He doesn’t seem to be a member of FF so I’d be leaning towards him rather than a career FG hack or an unprincipled crank. I’d be a big fan of having a non party candidate, particularly given his background as a former senior military officer who has served overseas and his sporting achievements (although the fact his GAA achievements are for Dublin are a mark against him for me).
He’ll be under a lot more scrutiny by the media now so they might uncover skeletons in his closet.
He has an interesting CV and obviously a good record of public service. He seems a strange choice for FF though. I’ve met him a good few times over the years and he doesn’t exactly light up a room. I really can’t see people warming to him. And I think, given that this election will be about personality as much as policy, he’s vulnerable to someone with a bit of charisma (should any such candidate get on the ballot).
When people run around declaring the job as being „ceremonial“, celebrity candidates are inevitable. I’d still vote for him over the rest as he has no political baggage.
Jim Gavin is a great man – beyond what he achieved with Dublin GAA, he’s also played a key role in introducing the new rules that have improved the game at large. He’s spent his career serving his country with the defence forces at home and on UN missions. He’s a family man and a very decent person and a very worthy candidate. You don’t vote a President for party affiliation as the role is above that, you vote for the quality of the person.
I don’t care how personable he may or not be, if he’s the kind of person who picks FF as his political home, he can get lost. We need those ghouls booted out.
Embarrassing from FF who should have just sat this one out
Used to work in marks and Spencers on grafton street. He used to come in for the paper the odd time. I was delighted when he walked up to my till. But unfortunately, he kept his head down and refused to respond to my „hows it going“. Then proceed to throw the change on the lower part of the till where the basket goes. And walked away. Disgusted me tbh. Will never forget it.

If you think Jim Gavin is a celebrity candidate you’re a fool, he’s forgotten more about public service than the rest of the candidates combined.
Also “I’ve never heard of him” or “he won’t get votes outside Dublin” aren’t the intelligent statements you think they are.
The people who’ve “never heard of him” should try reading a newspaper or engaging in current affairs.
I’m a never-FF’er, but Jim is a decent man, a man of integrity, and that beats all the others in the race. Would love to see that coked up prick get nominated now and Jim to wipe the floor with him!!

What? Why? I understand Bertie is a no go for FF (for obvious reasons) but they had some fantastic politicians who are retired today who would gladly look to be backed for presidency. Jim Gavin, with no offence to him or the role, is just a GAA coach. I wouldn’t want him as my president. He has to represent the country and the people
