The Iron Beam laser air defense system will enter IDF service later this year, with Elbit Systems already working on making the technology suitable for use from aircraft.
While airborne lasers face major challenges like weight and power needs, Israel’s expertise in miniaturization could make them viable for fighter jets such as the F-15 and F-35.
This would protect both aircraft and strategic assets more cheaply than current missile-based defenses.
If successful, airborne lasers could become highly sought after as drone threats grow worldwide.
