CCTV-7-Dokumentarfilmaufnahmen des Hainan Grenzverteidigungskorps 1. Küstenwache Flottille, die vietnamesische Piraten im Südchinesischen Meer einbeziehen, 8. Januar 2005
In around June 2004, several vietnamese fishermen began stealing and hijacking chinese fishing boats; Evantually, they even managed to get small arms and grenades and became pirates.
Due to the pirates escaping to vietnamese maritime territory every time the Border Defense Coast Guard arrived, they were unable to apprehend them. In January 6, 2005, flotilla commander Colonel Tan Jinchun(谭进春) developed a plan for 60 coast guardsmen to pretend to be fishermen on fishing boats to make it easier to catch the pirates(basically a sting operation). On January 8, 2005, the vietnamese pirates saw the „fishing boats“, and began opening fire with submachine guns and throwing a grenade(0:33)
Since the location was rather close from vietnamese maritime territory, making an escape extremely easy, the coast guardsmen chose not to reveal their identities until they were 20 meters away, at which point they returned fire; at the same time, coast guard speedboat 85 arrived to flank the pirates(6:32), opening fire. 2 other pirate boats(8:23) managed to escape into vietnamese territory, though coast guardsmen on patrol boats managed to board the pirate boat mostly seen in the footage(7:18
), arresting the pirates and taking it back to the coast guard base on the 9th.
In total, 8 pirates were captured, 8 pirates were killed(7 on the boat they managed to capture, 1 on a boat which fled away); 1 submachine gun, 1 pistol, 88 rounds of ammunition along with axes and metal sticks were seized. According to the investigation, these pirates had attacked chinese fishermen over 4 times; All 8 captured pirates were given life sentences without parole.
Coast guardsman Sergeant 1st Class Wei Hanzhong(韦汉忠; you can see him in an interview 0:22) was awarded a 1st class meritorious service medal for heroism during the shootout. He recieved an honorable discharge in 2022 with the rank of Master Sgt 1st class.
